Chapter 11: A Warmer Home

As autumn turned to winter, the atmosphere in the house shifted from cautious recovery to pure, chaotic joy. Finn was growing rapidly, his golden coat coming in thick and shiny, completely erasing the memory of the muddy, starving creature they had found in the alleyway.

Arthur’s expensive navy suits were now routinely covered in stray golden hairs, a fact that would have deeply bothered him a year ago. Now, he simply kept a lint roller in his briefcase and laughed it off.

One evening, Eleanor stood by the kitchen island, pouring a glass of wine. She watched through the floor-to-ceiling windows as Arthur and Lily sat on the back patio. Arthur was trying to teach Finn how to "stay," though the puppy was much more interested in chewing on Arthur’s shoelaces. Lily was giggling uncontrollably.

Eleanor smiled into her glass. The house was no longer just a beautiful, sterile showroom. It was a home, messy and loud, filled with laughter and the click-clack of a puppy’s paws on the hardwood. Arthur had finally returned to them, fully and completely, brought back to life by the very thing he had feared the most.
