Chapter 5: A Fragile Truce

Arthur didn't say a word. Instead, he took off his expensive navy suit jacket and draped it over one of the kitchen island stools. He rolled up the sleeves of his white dress shirt and walked slowly back to the pantry.
He lowered his tall frame onto the floor, sitting cross-legged right on the pantry tiles. The little puppy cracked open one eye, shivering as the tall man loomed near.
Slowly, deliberately, Arthur extended his hand, letting the puppy sniff his knuckles. After a hesitant moment, a tiny, warm pink tongue flicked out and licked Arthur’s hand.
A lump formed in Arthur’s throat. He reached into the makeshift bed and gently scooped the fragile puppy into his arms, being incredibly careful of the bandaged leg. The puppy let out a small sigh and rested its chin against Arthur’s chest.
Arthur looked over at Lily, who was watching him with wide, hopeful eyes.
"Lily, come here," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion.
Lily hesitated, then ran over, dropping to her knees beside him.
"I'm not mad," Arthur said, looking deeply into his daughter's eyes. "I'm so sorry I made you feel like you had to hide. I was just... I was afraid of losing a friend again. But looking at this little guy, I think he needs us."
Lily’s face lit up with a blinding smile, the last of her tears drying. "Can we keep him, Daddy?"

Arthur looked up at Eleanor, who was smiling softly, wiping a stray tear from her own eye.
"Let's get him to an emergency vet first," Arthur said, gently petting the puppy's head. "The charity gala can wait. Family comes first."
