Chapter 6: The Midnight Drive

The sleek, black SUV tore through the quiet suburban streets, its headlights cutting through the darkness. Arthur gripped the leather steering wheel, his eyes fixed firmly on the road ahead. He had entirely forgotten about the prestigious charity gala, the VIP donors, and the speech resting in his breast pocket. All that mattered now was the small cardboard box resting safely on the backseat next to Lily.

Eleanor sat in the passenger seat, her shimmering gold gown contrasting sharply with the tense, quiet atmosphere of the car. She reached across the center console and placed her hand over Arthur’s. He gave her fingers a reassuring squeeze, a silent promise that they were in this together.

In the back, Lily spoke in soft, soothing whispers. "You're going to be okay, little guy. My dad is driving super fast. He's going to fix you."

Arthur glanced in the rearview mirror. He could barely see the puppy over the edge of the box, but he could hear the faint, rhythmic thumping of a tiny tail against the cardboard. The sound broke his heart and mended it all at once. The dog was in immense pain, terrified and broken, yet it was still trying to show gratitude. Arthur pressed his foot a little harder on the gas pedal as the neon sign of the 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic appeared on the horizon.
