Chapter 10 - The Mother They Planned to Frame.

The scheme revealed itself one document at a time.
The fake airline tickets were booked in Mara's name and the names of all four boys.
A transfer of twenty-five thousand dollars had been prepared from a shell company into Mara's bank account.
A draft anonymous complaint accused her of stealing confidential hotel data and planning to flee the country with the children.
Another document requested emergency custody for an unnamed paternal relative if Adrian's paternity was confirmed.
The unnamed relative was Victoria.
Mara read the papers with both hands trembling.
"She was going to make me look like a criminal."
Nolan nodded.
"Then she would claim the boys needed protection from you."
Adrian turned on him.
"And you helped write this."
Nolan did not flinch.
"The first drafts, yes."
Celeste stepped back from her father.
"How many times are you going to say yes before you realize what you became?"
Nolan's eyes reddened.
"I realized it too late."
"Too late for Mara."
"Too late for Adrian."
"Too late for four children who grew up thinking their father abandoned them."
Nolan lowered his head.
Celeste pulled off her engagement ring.
Adrian stared at her.
"What are you doing?"
She placed the ring on the steel counter.
"Not this."
"Celeste."
"I am not punishing you."
She looked toward Mara and the boys.
"I am refusing to stand in the middle of a truth that existed before I did."
Adrian's face tightened.
"You didn't cause this."
"No, but I benefited from it."
She swallowed.
"And six months ago, I found one of Mara's letters in my father's office."
Mara looked up sharply.
Celeste's voice cracked.
"I believed Victoria when she said Mara was trying to extort you."
"I tore the letter up."
Adrian stared at her.
"You never told me."
"I was afraid you would go looking for her."
The confession reopened the room in a different way.
Celeste had not created the lie, but she had chosen to protect her future with Adrian instead of questioning it.
Mara looked at her for a long moment.
"What did the letter say?"
Celeste wiped a tear from her cheek.
"It said one of the boys had asked why he didn't have a father."
Adrian looked away.
Noah, who had been coloring on a napkin at the far end of the kitchen, heard the last word.
"We have a father?"
Mara froze.
Every adult in the room turned toward him.
Noah looked from Mara to Adrian.
His brothers slowly stopped playing.
Adrian's throat closed.
Mara walked toward them and knelt.
"There is something we are trying to understand."
Theo pointed at Adrian.
"Is Mr. White Suit our dad?"
No one answered quickly enough.
Children notice silence better than adults do.
Mason stood and studied Adrian's face.
"You look like us."
Eli added, "Mom cries when people ask about our dad."
Mara closed her eyes.
Adrian moved closer but remained several feet away.
"I didn't know about you."
Noah frowned.
"How can a dad not know?"
The question was simple.
The answer was not.
Adrian crouched until he was at their height.
"Because some adults lied to your mom and lied to me."
Theo considered this.
"Are you mad?"
Adrian looked at Mara.
"Very."
Then he looked back at the boys.
"But not at you."
A phone rang in the kitchen.
It was Malcolm's.
He answered, listened, and slowly turned toward Adrian.
"Dr. Liu's colleague has the results."
No one moved.
Malcolm's voice became quieter.
"The probability of paternity is greater than 99.999 percent."
Mara covered her mouth.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The boys stared at him.
May you like
Then Malcolm added one more sentence.
"Victoria has already called an emergency board meeting to remove you as chief executive before midnight."
