Chapter 14 - The Name on the Birth Certificates.

The boardroom victory vanished in an instant.

Mara stood rigid beside the table while Victoria was escorted toward the doors.

Adrian watched Mara instead of his mother.

"What fifth name?"

Mara's lips parted, but no answer came.

Victoria laughed softly as the officers led her away.

"There are always more secrets, Adrian."

The doors closed behind her.

Celeste looked at Mara with concern rather than suspicion.

"You should tell him before she turns it into another weapon."

Mara lowered herself into a chair.

"The boys' birth certificates list a father."

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

"Who?"

"Daniel Bennett."

"Your brother?"

Mara nodded.

Daniel had been her older brother and closest friend.

He died in a highway accident two years earlier.

When the quadruplets were born prematurely, Mara had been terrified that Victoria would locate them through hospital records.

Nolan had warned her that an empty father field could make future paternity claims easier.

Daniel offered his name as a protective lie.

"He knew they weren't his," Mara said.

"He never pretended to be their father at home."

"He was Uncle Danny to them."

Adrian stared at the tabletop.

"So legally, I'm not their father yet."

"Not until the records are corrected."

Mara looked ashamed.

"I should have told you before the board vote."

Adrian's head lifted.

"Would it have changed the trust vote?"

Simon answered through the conference screen.

"Possibly."

The DNA result established biological paternity, but the competing birth record created a legal challenge.

The trust's temporary voting transfer could be disputed until a court corrected parentage.

Victoria had known exactly where the weak point was.

The failed removal vote might be challenged the next morning.

Mara pressed her palms together.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian heard six years of fear inside the words.

He wanted to be angry.

Instead, he imagined a young woman carrying four premature babies while powerful lawyers closed every door around her.

"Did Daniel protect them?"

"Every day."

"Did he love them?"

Mara's eyes filled.

"More than anything."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Then I'm not angry that his name kept them safe."

Mara began crying quietly.

It was the first time that night she cried without trying to hide it.

Celeste turned away to give her privacy.

Nolan stood in the corner looking older than he had hours earlier.

Adrian crouched beside Mara.

"But tomorrow, we correct the truth."

"If the court believes us."

"The DNA, the forged agreement, Nolan's confession, Victoria's recordings, and your brother's death records are enough to start."

Mara looked at him.

"You make it sound simple."

"It won't be."

"But simple isn't the same as possible."

The conference doors opened again.

Malcolm entered holding Adrian's black smartphone.

"Your residence called."

Adrian took the phone.

"What happened?"

"One of the boys woke up and asked for you."

Adrian stopped breathing for a second.

Mara gave a small, exhausted smile.

"Which one?"

"Noah."

They returned upstairs together.

Noah sat on the edge of the enormous bed in wrinkled gray trousers and socks.

His brothers slept around him.

When Adrian entered, Noah looked relieved.

"Did the bad lady take you?"

"No."

Adrian sat several feet away.

"She's talking to the police."

Noah nodded as if that solved enough of the world for tonight.

Then he looked at Mara.

"Mom said you might be our real dad."

Mara's eyes widened.

"Noah, I said we're still figuring things out."

"The science lady figured it out."

Adrian almost smiled.

Noah studied him seriously.

"Do you want to be our dad?"

The question stopped everyone in the room.

Adrian looked at the sleeping boys.

Then he looked at Mara.

"Yes."

His voice broke on the word.

"But wanting it doesn't erase the years I missed."

Noah thought about that.

"You can start tomorrow."

Adrian lowered his head because tears had finally reached his eyes.

The black smartphone buzzed in his hand.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

YOUR MOTHER WAS NOT WORKING ALONE.

Adrian stared at the screen.

May you like

A second message arrived.
