Chapter 9 - What Nolan Buried.

Malcolm searched Nolan before allowing him into the kitchen.
He carried no weapon, only a key card and an old leather document case.
Celeste stood several feet away from her father as if distance could protect her from whatever he was about to say.
"You drugged the guards?"
Nolan nodded.
"A mild sedative."
"Why?"
"Because Graham was going to take the boys, and I needed him to believe the floor was unprotected."
Adrian stared at him.
"You let him take four children as part of a plan?"
Nolan looked ashamed.
"I intended to intercept him at the freight elevator."
"You failed."
"Yes."
Mara stepped between the boys and Nolan.
"You also forged a document that stole six years from them."
Nolan's face collapsed slightly.
"Yes."
No defense followed.
That made the confession more disturbing.
He opened the leather case.
Inside was the original agreement Mara had signed six years earlier.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Adrian's supposed signature appeared beside it.
Nolan placed another sheet next to the agreement.
It was a signature practice page.
Adrian's name had been written dozens of times in slightly different strokes.
Celeste whispered, "Oh my God."
Nolan looked at his daughter.
"I forged it."
She recoiled.
"Why?"
"Victoria said Adrian would destroy his future if he married Mara."
"That isn't an answer."
Nolan closed his eyes.
"She also had evidence that I had moved client funds to cover your mother's gambling debts."
Celeste went still.
"Mom never gambled."
Nolan looked at the floor.
"I did."
The shame landed harder than the crime.
He had stolen money, blamed his dead wife, and allowed Victoria to own him through it.
Nolan said Victoria had ordered him to separate Adrian and Mara permanently.
First they blocked calls.
Then they intercepted letters.
Then they told Adrian Mara had ended the pregnancy.
Mara had actually been carrying four babies and was hospitalized twice with complications.
Victoria discovered that through the private clinic.
"She wanted me to end the pregnancy," Mara said.
Adrian turned sharply.
Nolan nodded.
"She offered to pay for it."
Mara's voice shook.
"I refused."
Nolan continued.
Victoria then offered money for Mara to leave the country.
Mara refused again.
So Victoria targeted Mara's mother, whose heart surgery was being covered through a charitable foundation controlled by Vale Meridian.
"She told me the coverage would disappear if I contacted Adrian," Mara said.
"My mother would have died waiting for another program."
Adrian looked sick.
"Why didn't you tell me after the surgery?"
Mara's eyes filled.
"Because by then I had four premature babies, no savings, and a letter saying you denied them."
"I thought you hated us."
Adrian could not answer.
Nolan reached deeper into the case and removed a small audio recorder.
"There is more."
Celeste laughed once without humor.
"Of course there is."
Nolan set the recorder on the counter.
"For the last six months, I recorded Victoria whenever she discussed Mara."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because I finally understood that she would sacrifice anyone, including Celeste, if it protected her control."
Nolan pressed play.
Victoria's voice filled the kitchen.
"If Adrian discovers the boys before the board vote, remove Mara first."
Nolan's recorded voice asked, "And the children?"
Victoria replied without hesitation.
"Children follow whoever still has legal custody."
Mara went cold.
The recording continued.
Nolan asked what would happen if Mara refused to leave.
Victoria's answer made Celeste grip the counter.
"Then create a reason the court would never give them back to her."
Adrian looked toward the four boys.
He finally understood the fake airline tickets.

They were not an escape plan.
They were evidence waiting to be planted.
