Chapter 13 - The Fifth Name.

Graham Cole had spent eighteen years carrying out Victoria's orders.
He had arranged private cars, paid confidential invoices, erased visitor logs, and learned when silence was more valuable than loyalty.
The events of that night had finally convinced him that Victoria would sacrifice him without hesitation.
The detectives allowed him to speak because his attorney was already on the way and because what he wanted to reveal concerned immediate company records.
Graham placed a flash drive on the table.
"Five years ago, Victoria created a private insurance file tied to Adrian."
Adrian frowned.
"What kind of insurance?"
"Key-person coverage."
Several directors exchanged looks.
Large companies often insured essential executives.
That alone was not suspicious.
Graham continued.
"But the beneficiary wasn't Vale Meridian."
Victoria's face went still.
"Stop talking."
Graham ignored her.
"The beneficiary was a holding company controlled by the Vale Family Leadership Trust."
Simon Pierce's voice came through the conference screen.
"That makes no sense."
"The trust would receive nearly two hundred million dollars if Adrian died while serving as chief executive."
Mara looked at Adrian.
Celeste stared at Victoria.
Adrian felt a strange calm settle over him.
"Why would that be worse than hiding my children?"
Graham's hands shook.
"Because the policy had a succession rider."
If Adrian died without legally recognized descendants, Victoria would recover temporary voting control over nearly all family shares.
If his children were recognized, that rider would fail.
The room became completely silent.
Mara understood first.
"That's why she needed them hidden."
Graham nodded.
Victoria rose from her chair.
"This is fantasy from a man trying to reduce his sentence."
Graham pointed at the flash drive.
"The policy, emails, and payment authorizations are on there."
One detective took the drive in an evidence bag.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
"Did you plan to kill me?"
Victoria's expression barely shifted.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Answer him," Mara said.
Victoria turned on her.
"You do not speak to me that way."
Mara's voice remained level.
"You tried to erase my children."
"I will speak to you any way I choose."
For the first time, one of the directors murmured agreement.
Victoria looked around the table and seemed to realize the room no longer moved with her.
Graham continued.
"I don't know whether she planned to hurt Adrian."
"But three months ago she ordered me to change the beneficiary confirmation and to keep the boys from being discovered until after tonight's board dinner."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Why tonight?"
The company secretary looked down at the agenda.
The board dinner included a vote to renew Adrian's five-year chief executive contract.
The new contract expanded the insurance coverage and the succession rider.
Victoria had intended to lock the arrangement in before the boys could become legal heirs.
Celeste whispered, "She wasn't just protecting control."
"She was protecting a future in which Adrian's death benefited her."
Victoria laughed once.
"Listen to yourselves."
"A legal insurance policy is not a murder plot."
Adrian nodded.
"Correct."
He looked at the detectives.
"But kidnapping children, forging documents, and framing their mother are not insurance paperwork."
The lead detective stepped toward Victoria.
"Mrs. Vale, we need you to come with us for questioning."
Victoria did not move.
"Do you know who I am?"
The detective's expression did not change.
"Yes."
That simple answer seemed to wound her more than disrespect would have.
She reached for her phone.
Malcolm stepped between her and the door.
"No calls until the detectives say otherwise."
Victoria stared at Adrian.
"You would let police parade your own mother out of your hotel?"
Adrian thought of Noah asking how a father could fail to know his children existed.
He thought of Mara raising four babies alone.
He thought of letters sitting unopened in a lawyer's office.
"You taught me that consequences protect institutions."
He stepped aside.
"Tonight, I finally believe you."
As the detectives moved toward her, Victoria leaned close to him.
"You think Mara will forgive you now?"
Adrian said nothing.
Victoria smiled with sudden cruelty.
"Ask her about the fifth name on the birth records."
Mara's face turned white.
May you like
Adrian looked at her.
"What fifth name?"
