Chapter 8 - The Red Folder.

The banquet kitchen on level twenty-seven was empty except for stainless steel counters, stacked plates, and four terrified children crouched beneath a preparation table.

Mara dropped to her knees when she saw them.

Noah ran into her arms first.

Eli, Mason, and Theo followed so quickly that all five of them ended up crying on the tile floor.

Adrian stopped several feet away.

He wanted to hold them.

He did not know whether he had earned the right even to ask.

Noah looked over Mara's shoulder.

"Mr. White Suit helped."

Adrian almost laughed through the fear.

"I tried."

Theo pointed toward the service hall.

"The bad man got scared."

Malcolm crouched near them.

"What happened?"

Noah held up a thick red folder.

"He dropped this when the elevator stopped."

The folder bore the Vale Meridian legal seal.

Celeste recognized it immediately.

"That's one of my father's privileged case files."

Adrian took it.

Inside were copies of Mara's medical records, old photographs, payment ledgers, and letters Adrian had written six years earlier.

Mara stared at the letters.

"I never got those."

Adrian pulled out the first envelope.

His handwriting was unmistakable.

Mara, please call me.

I don't care what happened.

I only need to know you're safe.

Another letter was dated three weeks later.

I found out about the pregnancy.

If you want me gone, I will respect it, but I need to hear that from you.

Mara covered her mouth.

"I thought you never tried."

Adrian looked at her.

"I tried every day."

The folder contained photocopies of each unopened letter, all stamped RECEIVED by Rowan Legal Group.

Celeste sat down hard on a steel stool.

"My father's office intercepted them."

At the back of the folder was a ledger with monthly payments.

Some went to a private medical clinic.

Some went to Mara's former landlord.

Some went to a telecom company.

One line item appeared every month for five years.

BENNETT MONITORING - G. COLE.

Mara whispered, "They watched us."

Adrian's anger turned frighteningly quiet.

"Yes."

Malcolm photographed every page before touching anything else.

Then Celeste found a sealed envelope inside the folder.

Her own name was written on it.

She opened it slowly.

A single page slid out.

It was a memo from Nolan Rowan to Victoria Vale dated two months earlier.

Celeste read the first sentence and went pale.

"What does it say?" Adrian asked.

She handed him the paper.

The memo warned that Mara had been hired by the Aurelia Grand and might eventually encounter Adrian.

Nolan recommended terminating Mara immediately.

Victoria had handwritten a response beneath it.

KEEP HER.

SHE IS EASIER TO WATCH INSIDE OUR WALLS.

Mara sank against the counter.

"She let me work here because she wanted me close."

Adrian kept reading.

The memo continued with a second warning.

One of the boys had recently required emergency treatment after a playground fall.

The hospital had performed blood typing.

The records created a potential match to Adrian's rare blood group.

Nolan feared an automated genealogical database could expose the connection.

Adrian looked at Celeste.

"This started before tonight."

She nodded weakly.

"They knew the risk was growing."

Malcolm's radio crackled.

"We have Graham Cole in custody at the loading dock."

Adrian stood.

"Good."

The officer continued.

"He says he didn't drug the guards."

Malcolm frowned.

"Then who did?"

The answer came from behind them.

A familiar voice filled the kitchen doorway.

"I did."

Nolan Rowan stood there holding both hands where security could see them.

Celeste stared at her father.

"Dad?"

May you like

Nolan's eyes were wet.

"I came to tell you the truth before Victoria kills it for good."
