Chapter 11 - The Vote Before Midnight.

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for eleven forty-five in the Aurelia Grand's private conference hall.
Victoria had moved faster than anyone expected.
By eleven twenty, every director in the city had received a notice accusing Adrian of exposing Vale Meridian to "unverified personal liabilities" and compromising company security.
She did not mention four children.
She did not mention forged documents.
She described Mara only as a hotel employee involved in a "potential extortion event."
Adrian read the notice on his black smartphone and almost admired the speed of the lie.
Mara did not.
"She's doing exactly what she planned to do to me."
"Then we stop letting her write the first version of the story," Adrian said.
Nolan offered to testify before the board.
Celeste looked at him coldly.
"You will testify to the police first."
Her father nodded.
Two detectives had already taken copies of the red folder and the audio recording.
Graham Cole was being questioned downstairs.
Hana's abduction complaint had turned the hotel into an active crime scene.
Still, Victoria acted as if none of that mattered.
Her confidence frightened Adrian more than panic would have.
She believed the board belonged to her.
She believed reputation would defeat evidence.
She had spent thirty years proving that was often true.
Adrian looked at the four boys asleep together across the king-size bed in the residence.
Their gray suits were wrinkled now, and Theo had lost one shoe.
Mara sat beside them, exhausted.
"You don't have to go to the meeting," Adrian told her.
"I do if she's going to call me an extortionist."
"You don't owe that board anything."
"No."
Mara looked at him.
"But I owe my sons a mother who doesn't disappear because Victoria Vale told her to."
Adrian nodded.
Celeste returned wearing a simple hotel robe over her gown because the sequined fabric had torn during the chase.
She carried a laptop.
"I found something in my father's cloud archive."
Nolan looked up sharply.
Celeste ignored him.
She opened a folder labeled VMB-LEGACY.
Inside were scanned minutes from a private trust meeting five years earlier.
Victoria had asked the trustees whether children unknown to Adrian could trigger the transfer clause.
The trustees answered yes if paternity was later established.
Adrian stared at the date.
"She knew the boys existed by then."
Nolan spoke quietly.
"She knew before they were born."
Mara's face tightened.
Celeste scrolled farther.
A second document was worse.
It was a memo from Victoria recommending that the board amend Adrian's employment contract so any "undisclosed dependent-related conflict" could be treated as misconduct.
The amendment had passed without Adrian understanding why the language existed.
"She built a trap five years in advance," Celeste whispered.
Adrian felt his anger settle into something colder and more useful.
"Good."
Mara stared at him.
"Good?"
"She thinks the clause protects her."
He picked up the trust documents.
"But the transfer to the boys became automatic the second the DNA result established paternity."
Celeste understood first.
"Victoria may not control enough votes anymore."
Adrian called Simon Pierce.
The accountant answered breathlessly.
"I've been trying to reach you."
"Calculate the voting rights now."
Simon hesitated.
"If the paternity report is legally accepted, your personal block drops from thirty-eight percent to nineteen."
"And the children's trusts?"
"Nineteen percent combined."
"Who controls them tonight?"
Simon went silent.
Adrian looked at Mara.
Mara looked back at him.
Simon finally answered.
"Until a guardian committee is appointed, the temporary voting authority belongs to the children's legal custodial parent."
Adrian's expression changed.
Mara blinked.
"Me?"
"Yes, Ms. Bennett," Simon said.
A slow realization moved through the room.
Victoria had spent six years hiding four children to prevent Mara from gaining power.
Now, because the truth emerged minutes before the board meeting, Mara controlled the exact votes Victoria needed.
Adrian's phone lit up with a new message.
VICTORIA VALE: COME ALONE OR I WILL MAKE SURE MARA LEAVES IN HANDCUFFS.
Mara read it over his shoulder.

Then she stood.
"Tell your mother I'm coming with nineteen percent."
