Chapter 10 - What the Audit Found.

.Marcus asked to speak in a private consultation room.
No one trusted him enough to go alone.
Evan, Claire, Noah, and Dana followed.
The door remained open.
Marcus sat at the small table and stared at his hands.
"Rebecca's company has worked with the foundation for three years," he said.
Evan leaned against the wall.
"We know."
"What you do not know is that Olivia found duplicate consulting invoices."
Claire's voice was sharp.
"How much?"
"I do not know the final amount."
"Try again," Evan said.
Marcus looked up.
"At least several million dollars across multiple vendors."
Noah's expression changed.
"And your wife signed off on them?"
Marcus nodded.
"Some. Victor approved others."
Evan felt anger building again, but this time he held it in place instead of letting it control him.
"Why did you change Olivia's chart?"
Marcus looked ashamed.
"Because I made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"I entered an order under the wrong patient profile."
Dana frowned.
"Then why delete it instead of correcting it transparently?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Because Victor called me."
Claire crossed her arms.
"There it is."
Marcus continued.
"He said Olivia's collapse would create scrutiny and told me any chart error would be used against the hospital."
"So you hid it," Evan said.
"I corrected it improperly."
"You hid it."
Marcus did not argue.
Evan asked the question he had been avoiding.
"Did your order cause Olivia to collapse?"
Marcus looked genuinely horrified.
"No."
"How can you know?"
"Because the order I entered was never administered to her."
Dana looked confused.
"The system shows a scan."
Marcus shook his head.
"That scan is what frightened me."
Noah leaned forward.
"Explain."
"The barcode scan happened eleven minutes before I entered the order."
Claire caught the implication first.
"Someone created a record to make it look like your mistake caused her condition."
Marcus nodded.
"Exactly."
Evan stared at him.
"Then someone planned a story before she collapsed."
"Yes."
Marcus rubbed his face.
"And I made it easier by hiding my error."
Dana looked toward the hallway.
"Who can create a backdated scan?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Someone with pharmacy systems access."
Noah wrote the words down.
Claire asked, "Does Rebecca have that?"
Marcus looked at her.
"No."
"Victor?"
"No."
Evan felt a new kind of dread.
"Then who does?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Dana's supervisor."
Dana's face drained of color.
"Nurse Manager Collins?"
Marcus nodded.
Dana shook her head immediately.
"She has been on leave for two weeks."
Noah checked his tablet.
His eyes narrowed.
"Her credentials were used tonight."
"Where?" Evan asked.
Noah turned the screen toward them.
The login came from a workstation inside Olivia's room.
The timestamp was 7:58 p.m.
Claire looked toward the ceiling camera feed.
"That is inside the missing fourteen minutes."
Then a new message appeared on Noah's screen.
The preserved camera system had recovered one corrupted still image.
It showed a figure in a red jacket entering Olivia's room.
Marcus insisted that the timing of the false scan mattered more than the medication name itself.
Someone had built a digital explanation before there was a crisis to explain.
That suggested planning, not panic.
Evan looked through the consultation-room window toward Olivia and felt a cold certainty settle over him.
Whoever had arranged the records expected her condition to be blamed on a medical mistake.
The deleted camera footage was not the beginning of the plan.
May you like
It was cleanup.
Behind her, holding the door open, was Victor Sloan.
