Chapter 6 - The Person With Access.

.The note changed the direction of the entire night.
Dana sat down hard in a chair near the nurses' station.
Her anger disappeared.
What replaced it looked like genuine fear.
"That is not mine," she said.
Noah placed the badge and note into a clear evidence sleeve from his security kit.
"How did your badge get to the nurses' station?"
Dana shook her head.
"I do not know."
Claire watched her closely.
"When did you last have it?"
"Before I went into Olivia's room."
Evan felt every head turn toward her.
Dana realized what she had said.
"I mean earlier."
Noah's voice stayed calm.
"Earlier when?"
Dana rubbed her bare wrist.
"Around seven-fifty."
Claire pointed to the camera still on Noah's tablet.
"So you were there."
Dana closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Victor exhaled impatiently.
"This has gone far enough."
Dana looked at him.
Something in her expression made Victor stop talking.
"Olivia rang the call button," Dana said.
"I went in because her assigned nurse was helping with an emergency."
Evan leaned closer.
"And the glass?"
"It was already there."
"Who brought it?"
"I do not know."
Claire shook her head.
"Olivia told me someone said it came from Evan."
Dana's eyes filled with alarm.
"I never said that."
Evan believed her for the first time.
Not completely.
But enough to listen.
"Why were you wearing the bracelet?"
Dana looked embarrassed.
"Because it is mine."
"Then why deny it?"
She looked at Victor again.
Victor's face was unreadable.
"Because I was told not to discuss what happened in that room."
The corridor went silent.
"Told by whom?" Noah asked.
Dana's answer came slowly.
"Dr. Marcus Hale."
Evan knew the name well.
Marcus had been Olivia's doctor for five years.
He had attended family dinners.
He had once spent Thanksgiving at Evan's house after losing his own father.
Claire looked disturbed.
"Why would Dr. Hale tell you to stay quiet?"
Dana swallowed.
"He said Olivia was confused and that discussing her statements could create panic."
"What statements?" Evan asked.
Dana looked toward Olivia's room.
"She said someone at the foundation gala wanted her quiet before the board meeting tomorrow."
Victor's face changed.
Only slightly.
Claire noticed.
"What board meeting?"
Evan answered without taking his eyes off Victor.
"Olivia was scheduled to present the foundation audit."
Claire stared at him.
"You never told me that."
"I did not know it mattered."
Victor stepped in.
"It does not."
Noah held up one hand.
"Mr. Sloan, who can delete room footage?"
Victor did not answer.
Noah continued.
"You can."
Victor's eyes hardened.
"So can security administrators."
"Including me," Noah said.
"And I did not."
Claire looked at Dana's missing badge.
"Can a staff badge open the security office?"
Noah shook his head.
"No."
"Then whoever deleted the video had higher access."
Evan turned toward Victor.
Victor's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
For the first time that night, he seemed genuinely surprised.
He answered.
No one could hear the voice on the other end.
But they all heard Victor's reply.
"Marcus, where are you?"
A long pause followed.
Then Victor looked directly at Evan.
Claire stepped away from the group and stared through the glass wall at Olivia.
Evan wanted to follow her, but he understood that an apology demanded more than words spoken while the crisis was still unfolding.
He stayed where he was and forced himself to listen instead of taking control.
May you like
It was a small decision, but after what he had done, small decisions mattered.
"What do you mean Olivia was never supposed to wake up tonight?"
