Chapter 5 - The Bracelet.

.Evan ran into the corridor before Noah could stop him.
Dana was already twenty yards away.
"Nurse Reeves."
She did not slow down.
"Dana."
This time she stopped.
She turned with an expression that looked more irritated than afraid.
"Mr. Cross, I am in the middle of my shift."
Evan glanced at her wrist.
The silver leaf bracelet was gone.
"Where is your bracelet?"
Dana's face remained calm.
"What bracelet?"
Claire and Noah reached them.
Claire held up the paused camera image on the tablet.
"That bracelet."
Dana looked at it for barely a second.
"That could belong to anyone."
"You were wearing it at the gala," Claire said.
Dana's eyes moved to Claire's cheek.
"You seem to have had a difficult evening."
The remark was deliberate.
Evan stepped forward, then stopped himself.
He had already let anger decide one thing tonight.
He would not do it again.
"Were you in Olivia's room before 8:14?"
Dana folded her hands.
"I checked on my patient."
"She is not assigned to you," Noah said.
Dana's gaze flickered.
It was small, but everyone saw it.
"I was covering."
"For whom?"
Dana said nothing.
Victor appeared behind them.
"This conversation is over."
Evan turned.
"You keep arriving at useful moments."
Victor ignored the comment.
"Nurse Reeves has patients to care for."
Claire stepped closer to Dana.
"Did Olivia ask you who sent the glass?"
Dana's face lost color.
Victor spoke sharply.
"Claire."
She did not look at him.
"Did she?"
Dana swallowed.
"She asked me nothing."
Noah raised the tablet.
"Then why is someone wearing your bracelet leaving her room seconds before the preserved footage begins?"
Dana looked at Victor.
That glance lasted less than a second.
It was enough.
Evan saw it.
Claire saw it.
Noah saw it.
Victor saw that they saw it.
"Bring your lawyer if you want to question employees," Victor said.
Evan's voice became quiet.
"I do not need a lawyer to ask why my sister's security video was deleted."
"Deleted footage does not mean a crime occurred."
"I did not say crime."
Victor's mouth tightened.
Dana stepped backward.
"I need to go."
Noah blocked the corridor without touching her.
"I would like your badge number for my report."
Dana reached toward the badge clipped to her pocket.
It was not there.
She looked down.
Claire noticed first.
"Your badge is missing."
Dana stared at the empty clip.
A hospital door opened behind them.
A young orderly stepped out holding a white envelope.
"Mr. Cross?"
Evan turned.
"Someone left this at the nurses' station for you."
There was no name on the front.
Inside was Dana's hospital badge.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
Evan read it twice.
Claire took it from his hand.
The message contained only seven words.
Dana looked toward the ceiling cameras as if she suddenly understood that every hallway might contain another missing piece.
Noah quietly requested a temporary lock on security deletions across the entire floor.
Victor objected, but Noah logged the objection into his incident report before Victor could finish speaking.
For the first time, hospital procedure was working against the people who wanted everything handled quietly.

Evan realized that silence had protected the wrong people for most of the evening.
"She did not delete the video. I did."
