Chapter 2 - The Folder and The Lie.

.The truck heater blasted warm air against Sophie's boots while Daniel sat behind the wheel in the dark motel parking lot with the black folder open across his knees.

He had driven only twelve miles from the mansion.

It felt like another life.

Sophie sat curled in the passenger seat beneath two motel blankets, holding a paper cup of hot chocolate with both hands.

Color had slowly returned to her face.

Daniel wanted to ask a hundred questions, but he forced himself to start with the simplest one.

"How long were you outside?"

Sophie stared into the cup.

"Maybe forty minutes."

Daniel's jaw locked.

"Why?"

"Evelyn said I stole her bracelet."

"Did you?"

"No."

Sophie had never been afraid to admit when she did something wrong.

She had once confessed to breaking a neighbor's window before Daniel even knew the window was broken.

"What happened before that?"

Sophie looked toward the motel window.

"I was looking for wrapping paper in Grandpa Arthur's study."

"There was a drawer open."

Daniel glanced at the brass key resting in the cup holder.

"What was in it?"

"A blue book."

"What kind of book?"

"I don't know."

"It had truck numbers and dates."

Sophie continued.

"Evelyn came in and got really mad."

"Did she see you reading it?"

"I only saw one page."

"What was on the page?"

Sophie squeezed her eyes shut, trying to remember.

"Route fourteen."

Harrow Freight had no Route Fourteen.

The number had been retired six years earlier after a fatal winter crash near Knoxville.

Daniel had been the safety director who ordered it removed permanently from the dispatch system.

"Are you sure?"

Sophie nodded.

"And there were red circles next to some names."

Before Daniel could ask more, her lower lip trembled.

"Then Evelyn said her bracelet was missing."

He moved carefully because he was afraid his anger would frighten her.

"She searched my room."

Sophie looked ashamed even though she had done nothing.

"She found it under my pillow."

"And then?"

"She told me to admit I stole it."

Sophie took a shaking breath.

"I wouldn't."

Daniel looked through the windshield at the falling snow.

"So she locked you outside."

Sophie nodded.

The mansion they had left was worth more than eight million.

For the first time in years, Daniel understood which place was safer.

He opened the black folder again.

The language was buried inside a paragraph titled "Mutual Release."

By signing the agreement, Daniel would acknowledge negligence involving unauthorized dispatch activity during the previous fiscal year.

He would also waive any claim to deferred compensation, performance equity, or profit participation.

Evelyn had not merely fired him.

She had tried to make him confess to something he did not do.

He checked the signature page.

His name had already been printed beneath a blank line.

Arthur Harrow's signature appeared under the company authorization.

He had seen Arthur sign documents for four years.

Then he placed the folder inside the truck's locked storage compartment.

Sophie watched him.

"Are we homeless?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"We may not know where home is tonight."

He reached across the console and took her hand.

"But home is wherever nobody gets to put you outside."

Sophie nodded slowly.

A second notification followed.

His final paycheck had been frozen pending an internal misconduct investigation.

A third message came from Evelyn.

You should have signed before leaving.

Daniel read it once.

Then another message appeared from an unknown number.

DO NOT LOSE THE KEY.

May you like

It was followed by one sentence.

Evelyn does not know Arthur gave it to Sophie.
