Chapter 5 - The Ledger Behind The Wall.

.Daniel walked outside before answering Arthur.
Snow had stopped falling, leaving the fields around Rachel's house painfully bright.
"What did you say?"
Arthur breathed slowly on the other end.
"Thomas did not take that truck without authorization."
Daniel gripped the porch rail.
"I saw the dispatch report."
"The report was changed."
"By who?"
Arthur went silent.
"Say her name."
"Evelyn."
He remembered identifying Thomas at the hospital.
Thomas had been thirty-two.
Daniel had spent years believing his brother died because he ignored every safety lesson Daniel ever taught him.
"What was Route Fourteen?"
Arthur answered reluctantly.
"A private freight channel."
"For what?"
"Off-book shipments."
"What kind of shipments?"
"High-value cargo that clients did not want entered into normal records."
Daniel stared across the snow.
"You mean illegal cargo."
"I mean cargo I should never have permitted."
Arthur continued.
"Evelyn expanded it after she took over operations."
"Why is Thomas's name in the ledger?"
"He was assigned a trailer without being told the route had been altered."
"The weather shutdown?"
"Was real."
"Then why was he on the road?"
"Because someone cleared his truck manually."
"Evelyn."
"Yes."
"Why did you let the report blame him?"
Arthur did not defend himself.
"I was a coward."
He refused to let tears come while Sophie was inside.
"You let my family bury him as a reckless driver."
"I know."
"You let me believe it."
"I know."
"Why are you telling me now?"
Arthur took a long breath.
"Because last week Evelyn told me she was going to remove you from the company."
"She already did."
"She planned more than termination."
Arthur's voice weakened.
"The agreement says you accept responsibility for unauthorized dispatch activity."
"I saw it."
"If you had signed, the old Route Fourteen records would have been placed under your credentials."
"She was going to make me the new Thomas."
"Yes."
"And Sophie?"
Arthur did not answer immediately.
"What did Sophie have to do with this?"
"Evelyn thought the child saw the ledger."
"She did."
"I hoped she would."
Daniel's anger snapped toward Arthur.
"You used my daughter."
"I tried to warn you."
"You put a key in your glove and told an eleven-year-old to go into your study."
"I had no safe way to contact you."
"You had a phone."
"Evelyn monitors my calls."
"You had legs."
Arthur accepted the insult.
"Not enough courage."
Arthur continued.
"I thought Sophie would take the ledger to you."
"Instead Evelyn locked her outside."
"I did not know she would do that."
"But you watched."
Arthur's silence answered.
Sophie looked up from the table.
"Was that Grandpa?"
"Yes."
"Is he okay?"
The fact that she still worried about Arthur made Daniel's anger hurt more.
"He is alive."
Sophie studied him carefully.
"That's not what I asked."
"Grandpa Arthur knew something bad was happening at the company."
"Did he give me the key?"
"Yes."
Sophie's face changed.
"So he wanted me to find that book."
"Yes."
"And he still let Evelyn put me outside."
Sophie was quiet for a long time.
Then she asked, "Why didn't he stop her?"
"Because some adults confuse being afraid with having no choice."
Sophie absorbed that.
"Was he afraid of Evelyn?"
"Yes."
"Are you?"
Daniel looked at the black folder on the counter.
"I was afraid of losing the house."
He looked at Sophie.
"Now I know what I almost lost instead."
When Daniel showed her one photograph from the blue ledger, she turned pale.
"I reported these trailer numbers."
"What happened?"
"My investigation disappeared."
"Who closed it?"
Maya looked at him.
"Your wife."
May you like
Then she slid a flash drive across the table.
"I kept a copy."
