Chapter 6 - The Route No One Drove.

.Maya's flash drive contained three years of dispatch exports, maintenance logs, and internal emails that had never appeared in Harrow Freight's official compliance archive.

Daniel reviewed them through the night.

The pattern was elegant enough to fool anyone who did not understand trucking.

A legitimate trailer left a warehouse under one route number.

Hours later, its electronic record went dark.

A second entry appeared under Route Fourteen.

The truck then reentered the system at another terminal as if nothing unusual had happened.

Fuel purchases were buried under maintenance expenses.

Daniel found fourteen shipments tied to Route Fourteen during the previous year.

Five had used his digital authorization code.

He had authorized none of them.

By dawn, the black folder made complete sense.

Evelyn needed his signature because the forged dispatches already pointed toward him.

The agreement would convert suspicious computer activity into an apparent confession.

"They used my credentials."

"I know."

"How long have you known?"

"I suspected it six months ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every time I tried to raise concerns, Evelyn reminded me you were her husband."

His marriage had become a wall that kept honest people from reaching him.

"I thought you were protecting her."

"I wasn't."

"You benefited from not asking."

He had lived in the mansion.

He had accepted the executive salary.

He had allowed Evelyn to tell him the company was simply becoming more sophisticated.

He had noticed strange decisions and called them growing pains.

He looked toward Sophie, asleep in Rachel's guest room.

At ten that morning, Daniel received notice that a hearing on Evelyn's temporary protective order would occur the following afternoon.

Her attorney had requested that Daniel be prohibited from returning to the mansion or Harrow Freight property.

Evelyn was trying to make his absence look court-ordered after she had already thrown him out.

Maya advised him to hire counsel immediately.

His attorney, Lena Ortiz, listened without interrupting as Daniel explained the snow, the bracelet, the black folder, the ledger, and Route Fourteen.

When he finished, Lena pointed to the folder.

"Did you sign anything?"

"No."

"Did you initial anything?"

"No."

"Did you verbally agree to any accusation?"

"No."

"Good."

She turned to Sophie.

"Do you still have the original phone recording?"

Sophie nodded.

"Do not edit it."

"I didn't."

"Do not send it to friends."

"I won't."

"Do not post anything online."

Sophie almost looked offended.

"I know."

"Good."

Then she became serious.

"Daniel, you need to understand something."

"This is no longer just a family dispute."

"I know."

"If the company records are what you say they are, somebody may have committed fraud, falsified safety documents, obstructed an investigation, and possibly contributed to a fatal crash."

"My brother."

"Yes."

"And if Evelyn believes you have evidence, she may become more aggressive."

Daniel's eyes went toward Sophie again.

"I don't care what she does to me."

"That sentence gets fathers in trouble."

"You care exactly what she does to you because your daughter needs you functional, alive, calm, and credible."

That evening, Arthur called again.

"I know you hate me."

Arthur's voice sounded older than it had at dinner.

"You should."

"But there is one thing Evelyn does not know."

Daniel listened.

"The black folder has a missing annex."

Daniel opened the folder on Rachel's table.

He checked the page numbers.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, eleven.

Page ten was gone.

May you like

Arthur continued.

"If you find page ten, you will understand why she needed Sophie out of that house before Christmas morning."
