Chapter 4 - The Motel and The Recording.

.Daniel stood motionless in the dark archive building with the blue ledger pressed against his chest.

A second later, emergency lights flickered on along the floor.

He heard a door open somewhere near the loading dock.

Daniel did not wait to learn who had entered.

He photographed six pages from the ledger, slid the book beneath his jacket, and left through the steel side door.

A black SUV turned into the rear lot as he reached his truck.

Daniel climbed into the cab and pulled away before the SUV stopped.

He drove in the opposite direction for twenty miles, then doubled back on county roads until he was certain nobody had followed him.

By noon, the blue ledger was inside a bank safe-deposit box under Daniel's name.

The photographs were backed up to two separate cloud accounts.

Only then did he return to Sophie.

"Evelyn called."

"What did she want?"

"She said Sophie is unstable."

"She said you took the child after threatening her."

"Did she mention the forty minutes in the snow?"

"No."

"Of course not."

Inside, Sophie sat at the kitchen table drawing with colored pencils.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"The dining room camera."

"What camera?"

"Grandpa Arthur had one installed after his medicine went missing last year."

She pointed toward the corner of Rachel's ceiling to show where she meant.

"It's tiny."

Daniel remembered Arthur complaining that staff moved things in the dining room.

Sophie opened her phone.

"I recorded Evelyn when she took me outside."

"You recorded it?"

"Not on purpose."

"I was making a video of the Christmas tree for Aunt Rachel."

The clip began with Sophie whispering about the ornaments.

Then Evelyn's voice entered from off-screen.

"Put the phone down."

The camera swung toward the floor.

The next minute was mostly carpet and Sophie's shoes.

Evelyn accused Sophie of stealing the bracelet.

Sophie denied it.

Arthur said quietly, "Evelyn, enough."

Evelyn replied, "You stay out of this."

Then came the sound of the front doors opening.

Sophie's voice trembled.

"Please don't make me go outside."

Sophie watched his face.

"I didn't want you to hear me cry."

Daniel put the phone down and pulled her against him.

"You never have to protect me from knowing somebody hurt you."

After a minute, she whispered, "There is more."

Then Evelyn spoke near the open doorway.

"When your father gets home, you will tell him you stole the bracelet."

Sophie said no.

Evelyn's voice became quieter.

"Then he loses his job, this house, and everything else."

The recording continued from Sophie's hand until the phone screen went dark.

"This isn't discipline."

"No."

"This is evidence."

"Yes."

The recording had begun at 6:18 p.m.

His truck had entered the driveway at 6:57.

Sophie had estimated almost perfectly.

At 2:06 p.m., a certified envelope arrived for Daniel at Rachel's address.

No one at Harrow Freight should have known he was there.

Inside was a petition from Evelyn seeking a temporary protective order.

She also claimed Sophie had displayed "concerning compulsive theft behavior."

Attached was a photograph of the missing diamond bracelet under Sophie's pillow.

"They're building a story."

The bracelet lay on a pink pillowcase.

Sophie's bedding at the mansion was blue.

The pillow in the photograph did not come from her room.

Daniel felt anger give way to focus.

Evelyn had prepared the accusation before Sophie ever entered Arthur's study.

This had started earlier than the snow.

Much earlier.

His phone rang.

Arthur's name appeared.

Daniel answered.

May you like

The old man's first words were almost a whisper.

"Your brother did not cause that crash."
