Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Without Mercy.
.Christmas Eve morning arrived with freezing rain instead of snow.
Daniel did not use Arthur's safe key.
Lena obtained a court order requiring Evelyn to preserve the contents of the safe and surrender documents related to Daniel's employment agreement.
The order reached the mansion at 10:12 a.m.
At 10:19, a Harrow Freight board meeting was called for noon.
Daniel was invited.
He knew it was not courtesy.
The boardroom occupied the top floor of the downtown Harrow Freight tower.
Daniel entered wearing the same brown canvas jacket he had worn when he found Sophie outside.
Evelyn sat at the head of the table in a dark green suit.
Arthur sat three seats away.
His posture looked smaller than Daniel remembered.
Evelyn opened with a prepared statement.
"Daniel Mercer has been terminated for serious violations of company dispatch policy."
"Those allegations are disputed."
Evelyn barely looked at her.
"Recent emotional family conflict has unfortunately complicated what should have remained a private personnel matter."
She was reducing Sophie in the snow to an emotional complication.
Evelyn displayed printed dispatch records carrying Daniel's authorization code.
Maya had already explained how the codes were copied.
Evelyn spoke for eight minutes.
She described Arthur as elderly and uninvolved in daily operations.
Then she presented the black folder as evidence that Daniel had been offered generous severance.
Lena placed another copy on the table.
"Please turn to the signature authorization."
Arthur looked down.
"Mr. Harrow, did you sign this document?"
Arthur raised his head.
"No."
Evelyn's face remained still.
"Did you authorize anyone to sign for you?"
"No."
"Did you approve Mr. Mercer's termination?"
"No."
Evelyn turned toward her father.
"You are confused."
Arthur looked at her.
For the first time Daniel saw no fear in the older man's eyes.
"I am ashamed."
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
"That is not the same as competent."
Arthur almost smiled.
"No, Evelyn."
He placed both hands on the table.
"Confusion would be easier."
The directors watched Evelyn carry the bracelet upstairs.
They watched her remove it from sight.
They watched Sophie enter later.
Evelyn remained controlled until the video showed her locking the door.
Then she said, "This is irrelevant to company governance."
Daniel finally spoke.
"You used a fake theft accusation against a child while you were trying to force me to sign away company rights."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You are making emotional conclusions."
"Then let's make financial ones."
Maya entered the room with a forensic accountant.
Evelyn's expression changed.
Maya distributed a summary of Route Fourteen transactions.
The board counsel stopped reading after the second page.
"Where did you get this?"
"From archived dispatch logs I preserved after my compliance investigation was suppressed."
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
"You're stealing company records now?"
Maya replied before he could.
"He didn't give them to me."
The forensic accountant explained that more than eight million dollars had moved through shell vendors tied to off-book freight activity.
Evelyn stood.
"This meeting is adjourned."
Arthur spoke.
"No."
He looked directly at the board.
"As founder and chairman emeritus, I request an immediate vote to place the chief executive on administrative leave pending investigation."
Evelyn stared at her father.
"You would destroy your own daughter for him?"
Arthur glanced at Daniel.
Then at the frozen video frame of Sophie outside.
"No."
"I almost destroyed a child for you."
Evelyn was placed on leave.
Before leaving, she leaned close to Daniel.
"You think this makes you safe?"
Daniel met her eyes.
"No."
She smiled faintly.
"Good."
Then she walked out carrying nothing.
Daniel looked at the table.
