Chapter 8 - The Bracelet and The Camera.

.The denial of the protective order should have felt like a victory.
It did not.
Daniel understood that Evelyn would not stop simply because one judge had seen through part of the story.
Lena filed an emergency motion preserving all mansion security footage from the night Sophie was locked outside.
She also sent preservation notices to Harrow Freight for dispatch records, server logs, personnel files, and communications concerning Daniel's termination.
By evening, Harrow Freight responded through counsel.
The company claimed that several surveillance files had been automatically overwritten.
"Convenient."
Daniel thought of Arthur's hidden dining room camera.
"Not all of them."
Arthur had installed his own device.
The footage was stored on a separate memory card.
But when Arthur tried to retrieve it, the camera was gone.
Daniel learned this during a private meeting at Lena's office.
Arthur arrived without a driver.
Sophie did not attend.
Daniel wanted her nowhere near him until he understood what Arthur was willing to do.
"The camera disappeared after court," Arthur said.
"Who knew it existed?"
"Evelyn."
"Anyone else?"
"One installer."
"Was it connected to the house network?"
"No."
"Then the memory card may still exist."
Arthur looked at Daniel.
"I made a copy last month."
"Why do you always reveal the useful thing after the disaster?"
Arthur absorbed the question.
"Because for years I learned to survive my daughter by keeping one thing hidden from her."
"That is not survival."
"No."
"What is it?"
"Cowardice with paperwork."
Daniel almost hated the honesty more.
Arthur removed a small envelope from his suit pocket.
He placed it on the table.
"The camera recorded continuously."
Lena inserted it into an adapter.
The footage showed the dining room from a high corner.
At 6:14 p.m., Evelyn entered alone carrying the diamond bracelet.
Three minutes later, she returned without it.
At 6:20, Sophie entered from the hallway.
The confrontation followed exactly as Sophie's phone had captured it.
Then came the moment Daniel had not seen.
Evelyn opened the front doors.
She took Sophie by the arm.
Just firmly enough that the choice was unmistakable.
Arthur stood from the table.
There was no audio on the camera.
Evelyn turned toward him.
Arthur stopped.
Then Sophie disappeared through the doorway.
Evelyn closed the door and locked it.
Arthur remained standing for almost a minute.
Then he sat.
The casualness hurt more than any explosion would have.
"This shows premeditation."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"It shows me sitting down."
"Yes," Daniel said.
Arthur did not defend himself.
At 6:42, Evelyn opened a cabinet near the sideboard.
She removed a black document folder.
At 6:45, she made a phone call.
At 6:50, she placed the folder on the sideboard and looked toward the front window.
She had planned the confrontation down to the minute.
Lena leaned closer to the image.
"Can we enhance the paper in her hand?"
Evelyn held a loose page before placing the folder down.
Arthur looked at the screen.
"Page ten."
At 6:52, Evelyn folded it once and slipped it into the green dress at her waist.
Daniel turned toward Arthur.
"Where would she put it?"
Arthur answered immediately.
"Her private safe."
"Where?"
"In the dressing room."
"Nobody is breaking into anything."
Daniel said nothing.
Arthur looked at him.
"You do not need to."
He reached into his suit pocket.
For the second time, he placed a key on the table.
"This one is mine."
Daniel stared at it.
May you like
Arthur's voice was almost inaudible.
"I am done sitting down."
