Chapter 13: The Final Verdict**

The permanent custody hearing was surprisingly brief. Diane did not even show up. Her lawyer offered a weak apology to the court, citing personal issues, but the judge simply waved it away. The absence spoke volumes, solidifying everything Peter and Mark had argued.
"Based on the overwhelming evidence, the recommendations of Child Protective Services, and the complete failure of the respondent to appear," the judge intoned, looking down from the bench, "I am granting full, permanent legal and physical custody of Drew and Lily to their uncle, Peter Hayes. The restraining order remains in effect indefinitely."
The bang of the gavel echoed through the courtroom, but to Peter, it sounded like the ringing of a bell signaling the end of a long, brutal war.
He shook Mark's hand, his vision blurring slightly. When he walked out of the heavy double doors of the courthouse and into the crisp afternoon air, the world looked brighter. The legal tightrope they had been walking for months was finally gone. They weren't just safe temporarily; they were safe permanently.
That evening, Peter ordered their favorite pizzas and bought a large chocolate cake. He sat them down at the kitchen table and told them the news in simple terms.
"The judge said you get to stay here with me," Peter smiled. "Forever. No one is ever going to take you away."

Drew let out a long breath and slumped back in his chair, a profound tension leaving his small shoulders. Lily simply reached for another slice of pizza, a tiny, contented smile playing on her lips.
