Chapter 7: The Gavel Falls**

The fluorescent lights of the county courthouse were harsh and unforgiving. Peter sat rigidly on a wooden bench beside his attorney, Mark, adjusting the collar of his suit. Across the aisle, Diane sat next to a court-appointed lawyer. She looked disheveled, her foot tapping erratically against the linoleum floor. She glared at Peter with venom, but he refused to break eye contact.

When the judge entered, the room fell silent. Mark presented the facts methodically: the police report, the medical records documenting Drew’s lacerated knee and Lily's malnourishment, and the formal CPS recommendation.

Diane’s lawyer attempted to argue that Diane was under immense financial stress and had simply made a lapse in judgment, requesting supervised visitation.

"A lapse in judgment is forgetting to pack a lunch," the judge interrupted, his voice stern. "Locking two children in a basement with a padlock is egregious abuse."

Diane suddenly stood up, her chair scraping loudly. "He stole them! Peter always thought he was better than me!" she yelled, pointing a trembling finger at her brother.

The bailiff stepped forward, and her lawyer quickly pulled her back down. The outburst was the final nail in the coffin.

"Temporary emergency custody is granted to the maternal uncle, Peter Hayes," the judge ruled, slamming his gavel. "A restraining order is hereby issued. Ms. Hayes, you are to have no contact with the minors. We will reconvene in sixty days for a permanent custody hearing."

Peter let out a breath he felt he had been holding for days.
