Chapter 10: The Unwanted Visitor**

Routine had become their anchor. Every Sunday morning, Peter took the kids to the local grocery store. It was usually a mundane task, but one that gave the children a sense of normalcy and choice. Drew was currently debating between two brands of cereal in aisle four when Peter felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
"Well, isn't this a perfect little family picture."
Peter turned. Standing at the end of the aisle, looking gaunt and frantic, was Diane.
Instinct took over. Peter instantly stepped backward, physically placing his body between Diane and the shopping cart where Lily sat. Drew dropped the cereal box, freezing in terror.
"Diane, you are violating a court order," Peter said, his voice low but projecting clearly down the aisle. "Leave now."
"I just want to say hi to my babies," she pleaded, taking a step forward.
"Do not take another step," Peter warned, raising a hand. He didn't break eye contact, but he spoke over his shoulder. "Drew, hold your sister's hand."
"Peter, please—"
"Manager to aisle four, please," Peter interrupted, speaking loudly to a passing employee. "I have a restraining order against this woman and need security."
Seeing the employee reach for a walkie-talkie, Diane’s expression morphed from pleading to pure hatred. "You're poisoning them against me!" she spat, before turning and speed-walking out of the store.
Peter turned back to the cart. Drew was shaking, but he was holding Lily's hand in a vice grip.

"It's okay," Peter said, crouching down to pull them both into a hug right there in the cereal aisle. "She's gone. She can't get past me."
