Chapter 20: The Golden Hour (Reprise)**

It was a late afternoon in autumn. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long, dramatic, golden shadows across the porch of the suburban home with gray siding.
Peter sat on the top step, nursing a cup of coffee. There was no toolbox today. The railing was fixed.
Down on the front lawn, Drew and Lily were tossing a football back and forth. Drew’s throw went wide, and Lily had to sprint to catch it, laughing as she tumbled into the soft grass.
"Nice catch, Lily-bug!" Peter called out from the porch.
"I got it, Dad!" she yelled back, throwing the ball to her brother.
Peter took a slow sip of his coffee, letting the peace of the moment wash over him. He thought back to that day, to the battered, desperate boy carrying his sister up these very steps, seeking a safe haven from a nightmare.
They had faced the darkness, fought the legal battles, weathered the night terrors, and put down new roots. The journey had tested everything Peter had in him, but as he watched his children play in the golden light of the afternoon, he knew he would do it all a thousand times over.
Drew ran up the steps, slightly out of breath, and sat down right next to Peter. He leaned against his father's arm.
"Having a good time, buddy?" Peter asked.
May you like
Drew looked out over the yard, then looked up at Peter with a contented smile. "Yeah. It's a really good day."
"It sure is," Peter agreed, wrapping an arm around his son's shoulders as Lily ran up to join them. The shadows on the porch were no longer ominous; they were just the quiet closing of a beautiful day, resting over a house that was finally, truly, a home.
