Chapter 19: The New Name**
The courtroom felt entirely different this time. The oppressive tension of the previous year was gone, replaced by an atmosphere of celebration. The judge was smiling as she reviewed the paperwork.
"It is always a good day when I get to preside over an adoption," she announced, looking down at Peter, Drew, and Lily, who were all dressed in their Sunday best.
Mark stood proudly to the side as the judge went through the formalities. She asked Peter to confirm his commitment, and then she looked directly at the children.
"Andrew and Lily, do you understand that from this day forward, this man is legally your father?"
"Yes, ma'am," Drew said proudly, holding his sister's hand.
"Then by the power vested in me, I approve this petition for adoption. I officially introduce the court to the new family: Peter, Drew, and Lily Hayes."
The gavel came down, but this time, it sounded like a cheer. The courtroom clerk clapped, and Mark pulled Peter into a massive bear hug.

They celebrated by going out for ice cream. As they sat in the parlor, eating massive sundaes, the waitress dropped off the check. "Here you go, folks," she smiled.
Peter looked at the check, then looked at his kids. Their faces were smeared with chocolate, their eyes bright and happy. He wasn't Uncle Peter anymore. He was Dad. And it was the best title he had ever held.
