Chapter 12 - The Vanishing Witness.

The boardroom screens flashed with a resolution Evelyn had never seen.
Emergency Resolution 47-B.
It proposed removing Evelyn from all operational authority pending investigation into alleged financial misconduct.
Her stomach turned when she saw the attached evidence.
The missing forty-eight million dollars had been digitally linked to her personal authorization code.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"That's impossible."
Thomas sat down calmly.
"The vote is already open."
Evelyn looked at the directors.
"You know those records are fabricated."
Henry Walsh shook his head.
"We don't know anything yet."
"You have a forged withdrawal document in front of you."
"And we have bank records showing your credentials approved transfers."
Arthur spoke through the phone.
"Those credentials were cloned."
Thomas smiled.
"Prove it."
Daniel checked the digital audit on his tablet.
"The transaction approvals originated inside this building."
Evelyn looked at him.
"From where?"
He hesitated.
"Your former office."
Marcus turned toward her.
"Nobody has used that office in months."
Evelyn remembered Nora Bell.
Marcus's assistant.
Arthur's estranged daughter.
The woman who had upgraded Celeste's access card.
"Where is Nora?"
Marcus frowned.
"She left the gala early."
"When?"
"Around eight thirty."
Daniel checked security records.
"Her badge never exited the building."
Arthur's voice changed.
"Find my daughter."
Thomas remained calm.
"This has nothing to do with Nora."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Then why did you answer before anyone accused her?"
Thomas's eyes narrowed.
The board vote showed three yes votes, four no votes, and five undecided.
Eleven minutes remained before midnight.
Evelyn walked around the table.
"Nobody votes until we locate Nora Bell."
Thomas laughed.
"You no longer control the meeting."
Celeste leaned toward one undecided director.
"If you vote based on forged evidence after hearing what you heard tonight, you own that decision forever."
The director looked away from the screen.
Marcus suddenly removed his phone from his pocket.
"I can prove Evelyn didn't authorize the transfers."
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stared at him.
"How?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Her authorization token was stored in my office safe."
Evelyn felt rage flare again.
"Why did you have it?"
"You gave it to me when your father was in hospice."
She remembered.
She had handed Marcus emergency access for forty-eight hours because she had spent two days beside her father's hospital bed.
"You were supposed to return it."
"I know."
"You told me you destroyed it."
"I lied."
Celeste closed her eyes.
"Of course you did."
Marcus ignored her.
"The safe logs show every time it was opened."
Daniel looked at him.
"Can you access them remotely?"
Marcus nodded.
He opened the security application.
The log appeared.
The safe had been opened at 2:13 a.m. three nights earlier.
Marcus had been in Chicago that night.
Evelyn had been at her country house.
The access method was biometric override.
Marcus stared at the name attached to it.
Nora Bell.
Arthur said nothing for several seconds.
Then he whispered.
"Nora."
Daniel immediately radioed security.
"Search the executive levels, service floors, and garage."
A response came back within a minute.
Nora's purse had been found in a staff restroom.
Her phone was inside.
She was not.
Arthur's breathing became audible through the speaker.
"Thomas, where is my daughter?"
Thomas looked genuinely irritated now.
"I am not responsible for every weak person who enters this building."
Arthur's voice shook with anger.
"Where is she?"
Thomas said nothing.
Lydia stepped closer to him.
"You always do this."
"Do what?"
"You turn frightened people into tools and throw them away when they become witnesses."
Thomas's expression sharpened.
"Be very careful, Lydia."
She smiled sadly.
"I spent half my life being careful of you."
The board screen updated.
Five yes.
Four no.
Three undecided.
Evelyn's authority could be suspended with seven votes.
Thomas needed two more.
Daniel received another radio call.
"We found blood."
Arthur made a sound Evelyn would remember for the rest of her life.
"Where?"
"Service stairwell, twenty-second floor."
Evelyn's eyes went to Thomas.
He did not react.
That lack of reaction frightened her more than surprise would have.
Daniel left two officers inside and headed for the door.
Arthur shouted through the phone.
"I'm coming to the hotel."
Evelyn answered.
"Arthur, stay where you are."
"That's my daughter."
"And if Thomas is trying to pull you out of position, don't give him what he wants."
Arthur went silent.
It was the hardest order Evelyn had ever given him.
Marcus looked at the vote count.
Six yes.
Thomas needed one.
Henry Walsh's screen still showed undecided.
Thomas leaned toward him.
"Henry, fulfill your fiduciary duty."
Evelyn looked at Henry.
"Your duty is to the trust, not to the man threatening it."
Henry's hand hovered above the voting control.
Then the boardroom doors slammed open.
Daniel stood there, breathing hard.
Nora Bell leaned against him, one hand pressed to a cut above her eyebrow.
Arthur shouted her name through the phone.
Nora looked toward Evelyn.
"Don't let them vote."

She held up a flash drive.
"I copied everything."
