Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath the Room.

The nineteenth floor had been sealed off from gala guests, but the corridor no longer felt private when Evelyn stepped from the elevator with Daniel and two security officers behind her.

Marcus ignored her refusal and came anyway.

Celeste came too, claiming she would not remain downstairs while people whispered about her.

Evelyn suspected she had another reason.

At the far end of the corridor, the door to Margaret Hart's archive suite stood open beneath a brass plaque engraved with 1911.

Splinters of polished wood surrounded the ruined lock.

One of the guards waited outside.

"Nobody came out after we found the hidden stairs."

Daniel raised his flashlight.

"Nobody?"

"Not through this door."

Evelyn entered first.

The room smelled faintly of dust, cedar, and the rose perfume her mother had worn for most of Evelyn's childhood.

Garment bags hung open inside the old wardrobe.

One champagne silk dress had been sliced near the hem.

Evelyn stared at the missing strip.

Daniel held up the evidence pouch.

The colors matched perfectly.

Celeste spoke from behind them.

"That proves someone framed me."

Marcus turned toward her.

"It proves your key card was found beside fabric cut from Margaret's dress."

"You think I would leave my own card behind?"

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

"People make mistakes when they're scared."

Celeste's expression tightened.

Behind the wardrobe, a narrow section of paneled wall had swung inward.

A stone staircase descended into darkness.

The hotel had been renovated four times since Evelyn was born.

She had seen blueprints, permits, engineering reports, and architectural models.

She had never seen this staircase.

Daniel went down first.

Evelyn followed.

Marcus came behind her despite another warning to stay back.

At the bottom stood a steel door with an old mechanical lock.

It had already been forced open.

Light glowed from inside.

Daniel pushed the door wider.

The hidden chamber was larger than Evelyn expected.

Metal filing cabinets lined one wall.

An antique desk sat beneath a single brass lamp.

Shelves held leather ledgers, cassette tapes, photographs, and boxes labeled by year.

A modern laptop sat open among objects that looked decades old.

Someone had been searching the room recently.

Drawers were pulled out.

Files covered the floor.

A shredder hummed beside the desk.

A man in a hotel maintenance uniform stood frozen near it.

Daniel's guards moved immediately.

"Hands where we can see them."

The man raised both hands.

Evelyn recognized him after several seconds.

His name was Owen Pike.

He had worked nights in building services for nearly two years.

"What are you doing here?"

Owen's face was wet with sweat.

"I was told to clean it out."

Marcus stepped forward.

"By who?"

Owen looked at him and then quickly away.

That glance was enough to make Evelyn notice.

Marcus noticed too.

"Don't look at me like that."

Owen swallowed.

"I got instructions through messages."

Daniel took the laptop.

"From whom?"

"I don't know."

"You broke into a sealed room because an anonymous person texted you?"

Owen shook his head.

"They paid me."

Evelyn's eyes went to the shredder.

A half-destroyed page protruded from the top.

She pulled it out carefully.

Across the surviving section was her father's signature.

Below it were the words Hart Legacy Trust Amendment.

Marcus leaned closer.

"That's the document I saw."

Evelyn turned toward him.

"The one with my forged signature?"

"It looked like this."

"Where did you see it?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Celeste showed it to me."

The room became still.

Celeste's face sharpened with outrage.

"You liar."

Marcus stared at her.

"You brought the copy to my office."

"Because your attorney sent it to me."

"My attorney never communicates through you."

"He did that day."

Evelyn looked between them.

The cracks in their alliance were appearing faster than either could control.

"Which attorney?"

Marcus answered.

"Calvin Pierce."

Arthur spoke through Evelyn's phone.

"Calvin Pierce has never represented the Hart trust."

Marcus looked toward the phone.

"He represented me."

Arthur's tone hardened.

"Then I suggest you ask why your personal attorney had access to a confidential family trust instrument."

Owen suddenly lunged toward the shredder.

Daniel caught him before he reached it.

A guard pulled him backward.

"Stop!"

Owen struggled.

"You don't understand."

Evelyn crouched beside the shredder.

Inside were dozens of narrow strips of paper.

One piece showed the upper half of a woman's photograph.

Dark hair.

A familiar smile.

Evelyn's hand began trembling.

"That's my mother."

She pulled another strip free.

This one showed Margaret standing beside a younger Arthur Bell and a man Evelyn did not recognize.

On the back was a handwritten date from twenty-eight years earlier.

Marcus crouched beside her.

"Who is he?"

Evelyn shook her head.

Arthur asked for a description.

She gave it.

Arthur stopped speaking.

Evelyn straightened.

"You know him."

Silence.

"Arthur."

"His name was Thomas Rowan."

Celeste made a small sound behind them.

Evelyn turned.

The rival's face was completely drained of color.

"Rowan?"

Arthur continued.

"He was your mother's chief financial officer before Marcus ever joined the company."

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

"Your father?"

Celeste said nothing.

Marcus stared at her.

"You told me your father died before you were born."

Celeste backed toward the steel door.

"He did."

Arthur's voice became colder.

"No, he didn't."

Evelyn gripped the edge of the desk.

"Where is he?"

Arthur answered.

"If the records in that room are what I think they are, Thomas Rowan did not die."

Owen stopped struggling.

May you like

He looked directly at Evelyn.

"He's the one who hired me."
