Chapter 13 - The Grand Ballroom Reckoning.

Nora Bell looked like she had fought her way through the walls of the hotel to reach the boardroom.
Her dark hair had fallen loose from its pins.
Blood marked the collar of her white blouse.
She held the flash drive so tightly that her knuckles were colorless.
Thomas Rowan did not look at the drive.
He looked at Nora.
"You should have left when you had the chance."
Arthur's voice exploded through Evelyn's phone.
"Do not speak to my daughter."
Nora flinched at her father's voice.
Then she looked toward the phone with an expression that carried years of anger and one instant of relief.
"Dad?"
"I'm here."
She closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"Later."
Arthur's voice broke.
"Just stay alive now."
Evelyn stepped toward Nora.
"What is on the drive?"
Nora looked at Thomas.
"Everything he thought I deleted."
Thomas leaned back in his chair.
"A dramatic claim from a compromised employee."
Nora laughed weakly.
"You really only have one sentence, don't you?"
She handed the drive to Daniel.
"There are mirrored server logs, bank-routing instructions, forged signature templates, recorded calls with Calvin, and a file called Project Midnight."
Marcus went still.
"Open that one first."
Daniel inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
The file opened.
A timeline filled the screen.
Six months of planned events were listed by date.
Evelyn's father's funeral.
Her leave from the board.
Marcus receiving expanded executive authority.
Celeste's introduction to Marcus at a charity dinner.
The forged trust withdrawal.
Transfers through Vale Meridian.
The gala.
The public expulsion.
The emergency board vote.
Beside the final entry were four words.
ELIMINATE COMPETING BENEFICIARY CLAIMS.
Celeste stared at the screen.
"Claims."
She looked at Thomas.
"Plural."
Thomas said nothing.
Nora answered.
"He never planned to give you twenty-five percent."
Celeste's face hardened.
"What did he plan?"
Nora scrolled.
A second document appeared.
It proposed transferring the disputed Jonathan Hart interest into a litigation escrow controlled by a shell company.
The shell company traced back to Thomas.
Celeste laughed once.
"Of course."
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"And his role?"
Nora opened another file.
Marcus Vale was labeled Temporary Asset Conduit.
Marcus stared at the phrase.
"That's all I was?"
Thomas finally smiled.
"You wanted a throne so badly that you never checked whether the chair belonged to you."
Marcus lunged toward the table.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Not worth it."
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
For the first time all night, there was no anger in his face.
Only shame.
"I was a fool."
Evelyn held his gaze.
"You were cruel before you were fooled."
He looked down.
The board vote remained frozen at six yes, four no, and two undecided.
Henry Walsh slowly withdrew his hand from the voting panel.
"I change my vote to no."
Another director did the same.
The screen updated.
Six yes.
Six no.
Thomas's resolution failed.
The wall clock read 11:47 p.m.
Arthur spoke immediately.
"Evelyn, complete the joint-beneficiary certification before midnight."
Daniel opened the trust documents.
Evelyn and Celeste stood side by side.
Thomas rose.
"You think a signature fixes thirty years?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"No."
She signed her name.
"It stops you from stealing the next thirty."
Celeste took the pen.
Her hand trembled.
Thomas stepped toward her.
"I raised you."
Celeste looked up.
"You raised me to hate the wrong woman."
She signed.
Arthur's computer received the certification electronically.
"Filed."
The clock read 11:49.
Thomas remained strangely calm.
Evelyn noticed it.
"Why aren't you worried?"
Thomas looked at the chandelier reflected in the boardroom glass.
"Because you still think this hotel is the prize."
Nora's face changed.
"Evelyn."
She clicked through the Project Midnight files.
"There's another instruction."
Daniel leaned closer.
The file referenced the Grand Hart gala guest list.
High-level investors, lenders, and media figures were all downstairs.
A prepared press package had been scheduled for automatic release at 11:55.
Its headline accused Evelyn of embezzlement, mental instability, and financial abuse of the Hart trust.
Attached were fabricated medical records and manipulated bank statements.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
"He's going to destroy me publicly even if he loses the company."
Thomas smiled.
"Reputation moves faster than court orders."
Celeste looked toward the ballroom below.
"Then we move faster."
She grabbed Evelyn's hand.
"Come on."
Evelyn resisted.
"Where?"
"The gala."
Celeste's expression became fierce.
"He built tonight around humiliating you in front of everyone."
She looked at Thomas.
"So let's finish it in front of everyone."
They hurried from the boardroom.
Marcus followed.
Evelyn turned.
"No."
He stopped.
"Evelyn—"
"You don't get to stand beside me for the ending after helping create the beginning."
Marcus's face fell.
She continued toward the elevator with Celeste and Lydia.
At 11:53 p.m., the ballroom doors opened.
Hundreds of guests turned toward Evelyn again.
Only now she was not descending a staircase in tears.
She was walking toward the stage.
Celeste followed several feet behind her.
Whispers spread across the room.
Some guests had already received notifications containing Thomas's false press release.
Phones rose.
Cameras turned.
Evelyn stepped behind the microphone.
Thomas entered the ballroom at the rear.
He folded his arms.
He expected her to defend herself.
Evelyn did something else.
She looked at the crowd and said one sentence.
"Everything you are about to hear can be verified before I leave this stage."
May you like
Then the giant ballroom screens came alive behind her.
Project Midnight appeared in letters ten feet high.
