Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Ledger.

Celeste ran.

She spun toward the steel door so quickly that one heel snapped beneath her.

Daniel caught her arm before she reached the staircase.

"Let go of me!"

"You are not under arrest, Miss Rowan."

"Then you can't hold me."

"I'm preventing you from entering an active security scene unsupervised."

"I'm trying to leave it."

Evelyn watched Celeste's panic with a growing certainty that the woman knew far more than she had admitted.

Marcus moved between them.

"Celeste, who is Thomas Rowan?"

"My father."

"You told me he was dead."

"Because that is what my mother told me."

"Arthur says he isn't."

Celeste looked at Evelyn's phone as if Arthur's voice were a weapon pointed at her.

"Then Arthur is lying."

Evelyn opened one of the leather ledgers on the desk.

The pages were filled with her mother's handwriting.

Dates ran back nearly thirty years.

Names appeared beside hotel acquisitions, employee settlements, charitable donations, and payments Evelyn did not recognize.

On one page, Margaret had written Thomas Rowan in red ink.

Beside his name were three words.

Do not trust him.

Evelyn felt the room tilt.

She read the entry aloud.

Celeste stopped fighting Daniel.

Marcus looked at her.

"Your father worked for Margaret?"

"Apparently."

"You knew that."

"I knew he had worked for the Hart family."

"You never told me."

Celeste laughed bitterly.

"You never asked about anything that wasn't useful to you."

Marcus took a step toward her.

"You came into my life because of this family."

Celeste's eyes flashed.

"I came into your life because you hated being second to your wife."

The words struck him harder than any accusation from Evelyn could have.

Evelyn continued reading.

A dated entry described missing money from a hotel acquisition fund.

Another described forged vendor invoices.

Another contained a notation that Thomas Rowan had threatened to expose a private Hart family matter unless Margaret stopped an internal audit.

The final entry mentioning him was shorter.

Thomas disappeared tonight.

The ledger ended three pages later.

Evelyn looked at Arthur.

"What private family matter?"

Arthur did not answer immediately.

"I don't know what Margaret wrote in those private records."

"You were standing beside her in that photograph."

"That does not mean I knew everything she kept."

Evelyn turned another page.

A sealed envelope had been taped to the inside cover.

Her name was written across it.

Evelyn.

Her throat tightened.

She had not seen her mother's handwriting addressed directly to her in fourteen years.

Marcus watched her.

For the first time that night, his face softened.

"You don't have to open that now."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You don't get to protect me after destroying me."

He lowered his eyes.

She tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

My dearest Evelyn, if you are reading this, then someone has disturbed what your grandfather and I tried to bury.

Evelyn paused.

The next sentence made her grip the letter with both hands.

Thomas Rowan believed part of the Hart empire belonged to his daughter.

Celeste stared at her.

Marcus looked from one woman to the other.

Evelyn continued.

He was wrong about the reason, but not entirely wrong about the inheritance.

There is a trust beneficiary whose identity was deliberately concealed for her safety.

Do not assume the woman standing against you is your true enemy.

Evelyn read the line twice.

Celeste's smugness was gone.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"I don't know."

Celeste stepped closer despite Daniel's warning.

Evelyn did.

The truth is tied to the hotel purchased in 1998, the one your father never wanted discussed.

Find the original ledger before anyone changes it.

Trust Arthur with the company, but not with the whole truth.

Evelyn stopped.

Every person in the room turned toward the phone.

Arthur said nothing.

"Not with the whole truth," Evelyn repeated.

Arthur sighed.

"Margaret enjoyed dramatic wording."

"My mother was dying when she wrote this."

"I know."

"What did she mean?"

"I cannot answer what I do not know."

Evelyn looked at the photograph again.

Arthur stood close beside Margaret and Thomas Rowan.

All three were smiling.

On the edge of the image was a fourth person who had been partially cut away by the shredder.

Only one hand remained visible.

The hand wore a signet ring bearing the Hart crest.

Marcus noticed it too.

"Your father?"

Evelyn shook her head.

Her father had never worn the Hart crest ring.

Her grandfather had.

But her grandfather had supposedly been bedridden by that date.

Daniel examined the laptop Owen had been using.

"I found the payment instructions."

Evelyn turned.

"From Thomas?"

"The sender used an encrypted address, but there are attachments."

"Open them."

Daniel clicked.

A scanned document appeared.

At the top was the name Halcyon House Hotel, London.

Evelyn remembered the reference in her mother's letter.

The hotel purchased in 1998.

Below the acquisition agreement was a beneficiary schedule.

Most of the names were blacked out.

One remained visible.

Celeste Anne Rowan.

Celeste sank into the desk chair.

Marcus whispered her name.

She looked at Evelyn with tears of fury gathering in her eyes.

"Your family stole from mine."

Evelyn did not know whether to deny it.

Arthur spoke quickly.

"Do not jump to conclusions."

Celeste laughed through her tears.

"My name is on the trust."

"A trust schedule does not establish theft."

"Then what does it establish?"

Nobody answered.

Owen suddenly spoke from across the room.

"It establishes why Thomas wants both of you fighting."

Evelyn turned toward him.

"What did you say?"

Owen's face had changed.

He no longer looked merely frightened.

He looked resigned.

"He said if Evelyn hated Celeste enough, and Celeste hated Evelyn enough, neither one would notice who was taking the company."

Marcus stared at him.

"Who is taking it?"

May you like

Owen swallowed.

"You are."
