Chapter 2 - Before Midnight.

Darkness swallowed the staircase so completely that for one terrifying second Evelyn could hear only gasps, shoes scraping marble, and the frantic chime of phones being pulled from pockets.

Someone screamed near the reception desk.

A champagne flute shattered.

Evelyn remained at the foot of the staircase with Arthur still on the phone.

"Evelyn?"

"I'm here."

"Do not move."

A hand closed around her wrist.

Evelyn reacted instantly and twisted away.

"Don't touch me."

Marcus's voice came from inches away.

"It's me."

"That doesn't make it better."

Emergency lights flickered to life along the baseboards, bathing the lobby in dim red illumination.

Marcus stood before her looking less angry than afraid.

Celeste was several steps above them, clutching the brass rail.

"Marcus, what is happening?"

"Probably a power failure."

The hotel's chief engineer shouted from the far side of the lobby that the backup generator should have activated automatically.

It had not.

Arthur heard him through the phone.

"That building has independent emergency power."

Evelyn knew it too.

Her father had installed redundant systems after a blackout trapped guests in elevators sixteen years earlier.

"Arthur, start everything now."

"I already have."

"Every property?"

"Every property held under the Hart Legacy Trust."

Marcus heard the words.

"You can't do that."

Evelyn turned toward him.

"Watch me."

His phone began vibrating.

Then Celeste's phone vibrated.

Then the general manager's.

Then the chief financial officer's.

Within seconds the dark lobby filled with the electronic buzzing of incoming messages.

Marcus looked at his screen.

His face changed.

"Temporary suspension of executive authority," he read.

Evelyn said nothing.

He scrolled faster.

"Accounts frozen pending trustee review."

Celeste came down the remaining steps.

"What accounts?"

Marcus ignored her.

"Hotel operating accounts?"

Arthur's voice remained calm through Evelyn's phone.

"The trust-owned accounts remain active for payroll and guest services."

Marcus looked toward the phone.

"Who is that?"

"Arthur Bell."

Marcus's mouth tightened.

"That old man retired."

Arthur heard him.

"Mr. Vale, rumors of my retirement appear to have been greatly exaggerated."

Evelyn would have smiled under different circumstances.

Instead she looked toward the dark upper balcony.

One emergency light flashed twice and died.

Something moved behind a pillar.

She could not tell whether it was a guest or staff member.

Arthur continued.

"Evelyn, security records must be preserved immediately."

"Why?"

"Because whoever filed the forged trust challenge had internal access."

Marcus stepped closer.

"You keep saying forged."

Evelyn turned to him.

"Are you suggesting I signed it?"

"I'm saying I saw your signature."

"You saw a signature."

Celeste folded her arms.

"This is absurd."

Evelyn looked at her mother's brooch.

"Where did you get that?"

Celeste's hand rose protectively.

"Marcus gave it to me."

"Where did he get it?"

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than words.

Evelyn stepped toward him.

"Where?"

"From the private vault."

Her stomach turned.

Only three people were authorized to access that vault after her father's death.

Evelyn was one.

Arthur was another.

The third had been Marcus, because Evelyn had trusted her husband.

"When?"

"Months ago."

"You knew I thought it was stolen."

Marcus's face hardened again.

"You weren't using it."

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief.

"It was my mother's."

Celeste rolled her eyes.

"It's jewelry, Evelyn."

The slap of Evelyn's palm against the brass stair rail cracked through the lobby.

Celeste jumped.

Evelyn did not touch her.

She did not need to.

"Take it off."

Celeste smiled again, but it was weaker now.

"No."

Marcus turned toward Celeste.

"Just give it back."

Her head snapped toward him.

"Excuse me?"

"Give her the brooch."

Celeste's expression filled with outrage.

"Five minutes ago, you said she was finished."

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Things changed."

Evelyn almost admired the ugliness of the sentence.

That was Marcus in its purest form.

Loyalty lasted exactly as long as advantage.

The ballroom doors opened behind them.

A security supervisor named Daniel Price emerged carrying a flashlight.

"Mrs. Vale, we have a problem."

Evelyn looked at him.

Daniel had worked at the Grand Hart since she was sixteen.

He still called her Mrs. Vale only because Marcus had demanded it after the wedding.

"What happened?"

"Someone manually disabled the generator from the service control room."

Marcus stared at him.

"Who?"

"We're checking cameras."

Daniel swallowed.

"But the security server was wiped about ninety seconds before the power failed."

Arthur heard every word.

"Daniel, isolate all physical access logs."

Daniel recognized the voice.

"Mr. Bell?"

"Yes."

"I'll do it."

The lobby lights suddenly returned.

Guests blinked beneath the chandelier.

For one moment everything looked normal again.

Then every digital display behind the front desk changed at once.

The hotel's gold Hart emblem disappeared.

A system maintenance screen replaced it.

Marcus's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"What?"

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

"No, do not transfer anything."

He listened.

"I said do not transfer it."

Evelyn could hear a frantic male voice on the other end.

Marcus ended the call.

"What happened?" Celeste demanded.

He looked at Evelyn.

"The Manhattan property just rejected my access credentials."

Evelyn's phone chimed.

Arthur spoke.

"One down."

Another notification arrived.

"Boston transferred."

Another.

"Miami transferred."

Marcus's breathing became shallow.

"Stop this."

Evelyn held his gaze.

"You told me I had no place in your hotel."

Her voice was quiet.

"I'm simply correcting the ownership record."

Celeste suddenly grabbed Marcus's arm.

"You said you owned all of it."

Marcus pulled away.

"I do."

Arthur answered from the phone.

"No, Mr. Vale."

There was almost pity in his voice.

"You never did."

A hotel employee approached Daniel and whispered something.

Daniel's face tightened.

"Mrs. Hart."

Evelyn noticed the name immediately.

He had not called her Hart in years.

"Yes?"

"We found something in the service control room."

"What?"

Daniel looked toward Celeste.

Then toward Marcus.

"A key card registered to Miss Rowan."

Celeste's face went blank.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

"Celeste?"

She took one step backward.

"I've never been in that room."

Daniel reached into an evidence pouch.

Inside was a black hotel key card.

May you like

Beside it was a torn strip of champagne-colored silk.

The exact color of Evelyn's gown.
