Chapter 7 - The False Will.

The message on Celeste's phone changed the temperature of the room.
You were supposed to blame Evelyn.
Marcus read it twice.
Then he released Celeste's wrist as if her skin had burned him.
"Who sent that?"
Celeste shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me now."
"I am not lying."
Evelyn watched both of them with a strange detachment.
Hours earlier, seeing Marcus touch Celeste would have hurt.
Now their betrayal seemed almost small beside the machinery moving underneath it.
Arthur asked Evelyn to photograph the message and send it to him.
She did.
Daniel copied the number for security investigators.
Marcus paced once across the hidden room.
"If Thomas Rowan is behind this, why put money in my company?"
Owen answered from beside the wall.
"Because if the money is found, everyone looks at you."
Marcus stopped.
"And if it isn't found?"
"Then Vale Meridian buys distressed Hart properties after the trust collapses."
Evelyn frowned.
"Using our own stolen money."
Owen nodded.
"That was the plan."
Celeste stared at him.
"You knew all of this?"
"Pieces."
"How long have you worked for my father?"
"Seven months."
"Have you seen him?"
Owen looked away.
"Once."
"Where?"
"At a house in Connecticut."
Celeste went still.
"My mother's house?"
Owen did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Evelyn felt the old room tighten around them.
"Your mother is alive."
Celeste pressed both hands against the edge of the desk.
"If she is, she let me bury an empty coffin."
For the first time, Evelyn saw something in Celeste that was not arrogance.
It was abandonment.
She knew that feeling too well.
Marcus did not seem to notice.
He pointed at Owen.
"You are going to tell us where Thomas is."
"I don't know where he is tonight."
"Then tell us the address in Connecticut."
Daniel stepped between them.
"Mr. Vale, don't threaten a witness."
Marcus laughed.
"Witness?"
"Yes."
"To what crime?"
Arthur answered.
"Forgery, theft, fraud, unlawful access, destruction of records, and possibly conspiracy."
Marcus glared at Evelyn's phone.
"You seem very comfortable accusing people before the police are here."
Arthur's voice became sharper.
"I am comfortable preserving evidence before someone destroys more of it."
Evelyn opened another filing cabinet.
Inside were legal folders organized by family member.
One bore her father's name.
Another bore Margaret's.
A third bore Evelyn's own name.
She pulled it free.
The folder contained copies of wills dating from her childhood.
The most recent document was dated six months before her father died.
Evelyn recognized his signature immediately.
Marcus came closer.
"What is it?"
"My father's will."
"I've seen it."
Evelyn looked up.
"No, you haven't."
"Your attorney showed me the estate summary."
"That is not the same thing."
She read the first page.
The will left controlling economic interests in the Hart hotel group to the Hart Legacy Trust.
Evelyn was named primary beneficiary and successor protector.
That matched what she remembered.
Then she reached a handwritten codicil attached at the back.
It was dated two days before her father's death.
Evelyn had never seen it.
The handwriting looked like his.
I direct that upon Evelyn's incapacity or voluntary withdrawal, operational control may pass to her lawful spouse.
Marcus stared at the sentence.
"That's why the board gave me authority."
Evelyn read the next line.
Any such authority expires immediately upon fraud, coercion, infidelity materially affecting the trust, or attempted alienation of trust assets.
Celeste let out a humorless laugh.
"Infidelity."
Marcus ignored her.
Evelyn kept reading.
No spouse shall acquire beneficial ownership by marriage, appointment, or possession.
She looked up at Marcus.
"You knew this?"
"No."
"You used the first half of the codicil to take control."
"The board counsel gave me the summary."
"Who?"
Marcus looked sick before he even said the name.
"Calvin Pierce."
Arthur swore under his breath.
Evelyn had never heard him do that.
"What?"
Arthur spoke carefully.
"Calvin filed a different codicil with the probate court."
Evelyn's hand tightened around the document.
"Different how?"
"It omitted the expiration clause."
Marcus stared at her.
"I didn't know."
"Did you ever ask?"
"Why would I question my attorney?"
"Because the authority benefited you."
"It benefited the company."
Evelyn shook her head.
"You keep saying that like repetition makes it true."
Daniel's phone rang.
He stepped aside to answer.
Evelyn continued searching the folder.
Behind the valid will was another document.
This one bore her signature.
It stated that she voluntarily relinquished all protector powers over the trust.
The signature was excellent.
It was still not hers.
Marcus looked over her shoulder.
"That's the one."
"The document you believed?"
"Yes."
"When did you first see it?"
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Six weeks ago."
"And after seeing a document where your wife supposedly surrendered control of her entire inheritance, you never asked me about it?"
He had no answer.
Evelyn laughed softly, but there was no amusement in it.
"Because you wanted it to be true."
Marcus's face hardened.
"Because you had been absent for months."
"I was caring for my dying father."
"And I was running everything."
"There it is."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You decided effort made you owner."
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Maybe I decided I was tired of being treated like the man who married into your name."
Evelyn stared at him.
The confession was finally honest.
He had resented the Hart name from the beginning.
Celeste looked almost triumphant.
"He told me that constantly."
Marcus spun toward her.
"Shut up."
"Why?"
Her smile was cruel again.
"She deserves to know you hated every room with her name on it."
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"Did you?"
He remained silent.
Daniel returned before the silence became unbearable.
"Police are on their way."
He looked at Evelyn.
"And we traced the number that texted Miss Rowan."
"To Thomas?"
"No."
Daniel turned the screen toward them.
The number belonged to a prepaid phone purchased that afternoon.
The store's surveillance still showed the buyer.
It was Calvin Pierce.
Arthur's voice became very quiet.
"Then Calvin has chosen his side."
Evelyn looked at the forged document in her hands.
"Find him."
Daniel nodded.
Before he could move, Marcus's phone rang again.
He answered.
A woman's voice screamed through the speaker loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Marcus, don't let Evelyn sign anything."
Marcus froze.
May you like
Celeste whispered one word.
"Mom?"
