Chapter 15: The Checkmate

"I'm glad you've finally come to your senses, sweetheart," Marcus said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. Drop the ridiculous accusations, and I promise to make all this ugly press go away. We can go back to normal."
Evelyn looked down at the silver pen. She remembered the sheer terror she had felt the last time she was asked to sign these documents. Then, she looked up, meeting Marcus’s gaze with eyes as cold and unforgiving as a winter storm.
She didn't cower. She didn't flinch. Evelyn picked up the expensive pen, gripped it in both hands, and calmly snapped it in half. Ink splattered onto the pristine white documents. She tossed the broken pieces onto the table.
"I'm not signing anything," she said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "But you are."

Before Marcus could even react to her defiance, Arthur opened his briefcase. He laid out the sworn affidavit from the junior associate, the original financial ledgers, and a transcript of the audio recording from the dinner party.
"This is a formal resignation agreement," Arthur announced, sliding a new document toward Marcus. "You are resigning from all boards immediately, and you will surrender all claims to the marital assets. But even if you sign, this isn't a settlement. The District Attorney has already reviewed the unaltered hard drives and the audio of your physical assault. The police are waiting in the lobby."
