Chapter 8: The Anchor

The next morning, Evelyn woke up to the smell of fresh coffee. She was lying on Sarah’s comfortable, oversized couch, wrapped in a thick quilt. For the first time in memory, she hadn't woken up with her heart pounding, listening for the heavy footsteps of a volatile man.
Sarah walked into the living room, handing Evelyn a warm mug. "You're safe," Sarah said softly, sitting on the edge of the coffee table. "Now, we check the perimeter."
Evelyn nodded, taking a long sip of the coffee before opening her laptop. She had not acted on impulse last night; this escape had been carefully orchestrated. When she logged in, the funds were perfectly intact. Marcus’s financial grip on her was severed. She was financially independent and physically out of his reach. Now, she just needed the legal armor to ensure he could never drag her back.
