Chapter 6: The Digital Detonator

The dining room fell into a deathly silence, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Marcus standing over the empty space where Evelyn had just been cowering. Evelyn held her phone up, her thumb hovering over the screen. She didn't hesitate. With a single, decisive tap, she activated a delayed, encrypted email sequence she had meticulously prepared months ago, praying she would never actually have to use it.

Within three seconds, a sharp ding echoed from Marcus’s blazer pocket. Then, a chime from the younger associate’s phone on the table. Then, Eleanor’s purse vibrated.

Marcus pulled out his phone, his furious expression faltering as his eyes scanned the notification on his lock screen. It was an email from Evelyn, CC'd to the foundation's board of directors, his company's shareholders, and the Internal Revenue Service. Attached were gigabytes of undeniable digital evidence: hidden offshore accounts, forged ledgers, and a paper trail of the embezzlement Marcus had been using to keep his failing holding company afloat.

The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. The terrifying, abusive tyrant from ten seconds ago vanished, replaced by a panicked, cornered animal. Eleanor scrambled for her own phone, her jaw dropping as she read the subject line. Taking full advantage of their stunned, paralyzed silence, Evelyn stood up straight, smoothed out the wrinkles in her beige blouse, and turned her back on them. She walked out of the dining room, down the grand hallway, and out the heavy oak front doors into the cool night air.
