Chapter 16: The House of Cards Falls

The silence that fell over the glass-walled conference room was absolute. Marcus’s smug smile slowly melted off his face, replaced by a pallid, sickening dread. He looked from the broken pen, to the sworn affidavit, and finally to Arthur’s unyielding stare. He tried to speak, to spin a lie or issue a threat, but his voice completely failed him. The illusion of his power had evaporated in an instant.
Eleanor, sensing the catastrophic shift in the room, snatched the affidavit from the table. As her eyes scanned the junior associate’s testimony—which explicitly detailed her own involvement in the embezzlement scheme—her haughty facade shattered into pieces.

Marcus shrank back, betrayed by the very woman who had enabled his cruelty for years. Watching them turn on each other, tearing at one another to save themselves, Evelyn felt a profound sense of closure. They were not untouchable titans of society; they were small, pathetic, and fundamentally cowardly. Before the argument could escalate further, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open. Two uniformed NYPD officers and a detective stepped inside, holding a warrant for Marcus Vance’s arrest.
