Chapter 10 - Behind the Pantry Wall.
Connor pulled away a wooden panel and found Helen in a small records room.
She was shaken but unharmed.
Martin had lured her there with a message from Evelyn's phone and locked the passage from outside.
Helen had used a metal shelf bracket to signal through the wall.
Inside the room were decades of Hale family records that Evelyn claimed had been destroyed.
They found Green Harbor statements, Thomas Hale's original will, and payment records bearing Martin's private authorization code.
They also found a folder labeled FAITH MORGAN.
It contained school photographs, job applications, and copies of apartment leases dating back ten years.
Martin had watched Faith long before she met Connor.
Laura's daughter was the only person who might inherit the evidence hidden in the necklace.
The background investigation had not begun with Evelyn's suspicion.
Martin had supplied most of the material and encouraged Evelyn to believe Faith was targeting Connor.
"He used my worst instincts," Evelyn said.
Faith did not soften.
"You still chose them."
Evelyn accepted the words without defense.
Among the documents, Helen discovered that Martin had used Green Harbor to purchase voting shares through shell companies.
He planned to remove Connor at the shareholder meeting, regardless of the DNA result.
Connor needed one additional vote to stop him.
That vote belonged to Evelyn.
She would have to publicly admit the hidden fund, the surveillance report, and years of concealed records.
"If I do that, I lose everything," she said.
"You may lose a title," Faith replied.
"Other people nearly lost their lives as they knew them."
Evelyn signed a sworn statement.
Before Helen could transmit it, the electricity failed.
The passage door slammed shut.
Smoke began drifting through the ventilation grate, thick but not yet hot.
Connor covered Noah's empty stroller blanket over Faith's mouth and searched for the release.
Helen found an old mechanical latch behind a cabinet.
They escaped into the garden as emergency crews arrived.
The smoke came from a deliberately overheated motor in the basement, designed to trigger panic and destroy records without open flames.
Martin was nowhere on the property.
Evelyn's phone rang.
He told her he had one final copy of Thomas Hale's will and would release it with a forged DNA report unless she voted with him.
Evelyn looked at Connor.
"He still thinks shame controls this family."
She handed the phone to Helen.
"Let him keep thinking that until tomorrow."
