Chapter 9 - The Photograph of Noah.
Faith's fear became cold and precise.
She knew Noah was safe with Connor and Helen at a secure location, which meant Martin's photograph had been taken earlier.
She refused to let him see relief on her face.
"What do you want?"
"The storage card and Laura Morgan's original ledger."
Grant moved between them.
Martin reminded him that loyalty had kept his daughter protected for years.
"Fear kept us quiet," Grant said.
"That is not loyalty."
Police lights appeared at both garage entrances.
Martin dropped the folder and ran toward the stairwell.
He escaped through a maintenance corridor that someone had unlocked in advance.
Only three people knew about the controlled meeting.
Faith, Connor, and Helen realized the investigation still had a leak.
The photograph of Noah carried a daycare timestamp from the previous week.
On the back, Martin had written a bank account number and the initials E.H.
Connor believed it was another attempt to implicate Evelyn.
Faith was no longer certain.
Evelyn had lied too many times for innocence to feel simple.
That night, the DNA comparison returned.
Connor was Thomas Hale's biological son.
Martin's entire claim to corporate control depended on a doubt that had never been true.
Connor called an emergency shareholder meeting for Friday morning.
He planned to present the test, the storage card, Grant's testimony, and Daniel's records.
On Thursday evening, Helen disappeared.
Her car was found outside the Hale house with the driver's door open.
Inside lay her broken glasses and a printed copy of Connor's meeting agenda.
Evelyn claimed Helen had never entered the house.
Security footage from the front gate had been erased.
Faith walked through the kitchen searching for anything out of place.
The dishes were gone, the counters gleamed, and the room looked as perfect as it had before the nightmare began.
Then she saw a wet footprint beside the locked pantry.
Connor opened the door.
Behind shelves of serving pieces was a narrow service passage from the original house.
At the end, they found Helen's scarf and a phone playing a recorded message.
Martin's voice filled the dark corridor.
"Cancel the meeting, or the judge becomes the final person your family fails to protect."
The recording ended with three soft knocks.
Three knocks came from the wall behind them.
