Chapter 13 - The Father Who Vanished.
Faith had spent three years believing Samuel left because responsibility frightened him.
Now she wondered whether their entire relationship had been an assignment.
Connor wanted to find him immediately.
Faith wanted the truth, but she feared what it might do to Noah.
Helen located a payment from Martin to Samuel three weeks before Noah's birth.
Another payment appeared one week after Samuel vanished.
The memo line read TASK COMPLETE.
Faith became physically ill when she saw it.
Connor sat beside her without offering easy promises.
"Whatever he did, Noah is not part of his deception," he said.
Samuel contacted Faith that night from an unknown number.
"I never meant for Martin to find you," he said.
"You were paid to meet me."
"At first."
"And later?"
Samuel claimed he fell in love with her and tried to leave Martin's network.
Martin threatened to expose his illegal surveillance work and take control of Green Harbor.
Samuel disappeared to draw attention away from Faith and had secretly monitored Noah's safety ever since.
Faith remembered the photographs from outside the daycare.
"You call that protection?"
"I call it the only thing I knew how to do."
He offered to surrender the original surveillance archive if Faith met him at a public train station.
Investigators prepared the location.
Samuel arrived carrying a red folder and immediately raised his empty hands.
He looked older, thinner, and deeply tired.
Noah was not present.
Faith refused to let Samuel use the child as a shortcut to forgiveness.
The folder contained recordings proving Martin planned the recent intimidation campaign.
It also contained a sealed letter from Laura to Faith.
Samuel had kept it for four years.
"Why?" Faith asked.
"Because the letter proves I knew who you were before I approached you."
Faith opened it anyway.
Laura warned her that charm without honesty was another form of control.
She urged Faith to judge people by what they repaired after the truth became costly.
Samuel offered to testify and accept the consequences of his work.
Faith told him that accountability was not the same as reconciliation.
As investigators led him away for formal questioning, he turned back.
"Martin was not the person who ordered the daycare photographs."
Faith stopped.
"Then who was?"
Samuel looked directly at Connor.
"Someone using an access account registered to Evelyn Hale."
