Chapter 11 - The Vote.
The shareholder meeting began at nine in the same conference room where Daniel had collapsed.
Martin sat at the head of the table as though the chair already belonged to him.
He presented documents accusing Connor of hiding company records and influencing a paternity test.
Several directors avoided Connor's eyes.
Then Martin called Faith a financially motivated outsider who had manipulated a family dispute.
Faith felt the old humiliation return, but she did not touch her necklace.
She placed both hands flat on the table.
"I came to a family lunch with a sick child," she said.
"Your scheme turned me into a suspect because my mother left evidence you could not control."
Martin smiled.
"A dramatic story is not proof."
Daniel entered with federal financial investigators and produced authenticated bank records.
Grant testified that Martin ordered the apartment intrusion and the hotel theft.
Helen submitted the records found behind the pantry wall.
Martin still held enough proxy votes to force Connor out.
Everything depended on Evelyn.
She rose slowly.
For the first time, she described how pride had made her vulnerable to Martin's manipulation.
She admitted ordering the background check and forcing Faith to remain in the kitchen.
"I believed control could preserve respect," she said.
"It only preserved fear."
She cast her shares against Martin.
The motion to remove Connor failed by one vote.
Investigators approached Martin, but he requested permission to retrieve medication from his briefcase.
Instead, he pulled out a second phone and activated a timed data release.
"By noon, every private Hale record will be public," he said.
Connor did not move.
"Release them."
Martin appeared confused.
"You will lose the company."
"A company built on concealed harm should change or disappear."
Faith watched Evelyn absorb her son's words.
The investigators secured Martin's phone, but the upload had already begun.
Daniel traced it to a remote server and estimated they had eleven minutes to stop the release.
The access key required the original silver F necklace.
Faith removed it from her neck.
Martin laughed.
"That key will open the server, but it will also erase every file proving what I did."
Faith looked at Daniel.
"Is he telling the truth?"
Daniel examined the code and went pale.
"Partly."
The server offered two commands.
One protected the private family records but erased the financial evidence.
The other preserved the evidence and released every secret.
The timer showed sixty seconds.
Connor looked at Faith.
"Your mother left the choice to you."
