Chapter 7 - The House of Perfect Stories.
Connor demanded that Evelyn meet them at the old Hale family home.
She arrived without Grant and without her usual confidence.
The photograph of the two necklaces lay on the library table.
Evelyn admitted that Laura had once been her closest friend.
After Connor's father died, they created Green Harbor to protect company employees during a financial crisis.
Martin Vale later persuaded Evelyn to move the fund off the company books.
"It was supposed to be temporary," she said.
"Temporary for six years?" Connor asked.
Evelyn claimed Laura had discovered that Martin was stealing from the hidden account.
Before Laura could expose him, she became ill.
"Why was Connor named beneficiary?" Faith asked.
Evelyn looked toward the dark window.
"Because Laura believed he would eventually repair what we had broken."
Faith did not believe the answer was complete.
"What child did my mother protect?"
Evelyn's face tightened.
She confessed that Grant had a daughter who required expensive care years earlier.
Martin used the child's medical bills to pressure Grant into moving documents and intimidating witnesses.
Laura secretly paid for the care and kept Grant's name out of the investigation.
"Grant was the child?" Connor asked.
"No. His daughter was."
The explanation fit the letter but not Evelyn's fear of the necklace.
Faith placed the pendant on the table.
Evelyn reached for it instinctively.
A hidden hinge opened beneath her thumb.
Inside the tiny silver case was a micro-storage card.
Laura had concealed evidence in plain sight.
Connor connected the card to an offline laptop.
It contained scanned invoices, recorded calls, and a video from Laura.
In the video, Laura looked directly into the camera.
"If Faith finds this, Evelyn has failed to keep her promise."
Evelyn began to cry without making a sound.
Laura continued.
"Martin Vale controls Green Harbor, but Evelyn allowed him to believe she controlled Faith."
The video cut out before explaining what that meant.
The card contained one final audio file dated the night Laura died.
Martin's voice said, "Bring me the necklace, or Connor learns the truth about his father."
Connor paused the recording.
"What truth?"
Evelyn looked at her son.
"Your father did not die believing you were his child."
