Chapter 10 - Evelyn's Last Day.
Evelyn Moore had cared for Lily from infancy until Eleanor abruptly fired her eleven months earlier.
At the time, Eleanor had told everyone Evelyn stole jewelry.
Daniel had believed it.
Claire had not believed it, but she had been too exhausted and too intimidated by Eleanor to fight the family decision as hard as she should have.
That failure returned now with teeth.
Evelyn took the witness stand after the judge reopened the evidentiary portion of the hearing.
She gave her name and former occupation.
Then she looked at Claire.
"I'm sorry I disappeared."
Claire could barely speak.
"Why did you?"
Evelyn glanced at Eleanor.
"Because she threatened my son."
The courtroom went silent.
Evelyn explained that she first became suspicious when Lily repeatedly became drowsy during visits to Eleanor's house.
She had once seen Eleanor add drops from a blue bottle to a glass of apple juice.
When Evelyn questioned it, Eleanor claimed the drops were herbal.
Evelyn secretly photographed the bottle.
Three days later, Steven Warren confronted her in the Bennett garage and warned her to stop interfering with medical decisions.
Evelyn told Daniel.
Claire turned toward her husband.
His face went white.
"You told him?"
Evelyn nodded.
"He said his mother would never do that."
Claire felt something inside her finally break cleanly instead of painfully.
Daniel had known there was a direct warning.
He had not merely missed clues.
He had chosen not to investigate one.
Daniel covered his mouth with one hand.
"I thought you were trying to keep your job."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"My job was keeping Lily safe."
No one defended him.
Evelyn continued.
On her final day, she had watched Eleanor place a diamond brooch inside Evelyn's purse and then accuse her of theft in front of household staff.
Evelyn left before the police were called because Eleanor privately threatened to ruin her son's immigration sponsorship at his workplace.
For months, she stayed quiet.
Richard Bennett eventually found her.
He apologized.
He asked her to document everything she remembered.
He gave her a number to call if something happened to him.
That number belonged to Margaret Hale.
Evelyn opened her worn purse and removed a tiny memory card.
"Richard told me not to give this to anyone until someone tried to take Lily from Claire."
The memory card contained a short video recorded from Evelyn's phone through a partly open pantry door.
Eleanor stood at the kitchen island.
Steven Warren stood beside her.
On the counter were two blue bottles.
Eleanor held one up.
"Richard is tolerating this dose now."
Warren answered.
"Then don't increase it."
"I need him confused before Friday."
"Confused is one thing."
Warren lowered his voice.
"Dead is another."
Eleanor's face became visible when she turned toward the camera.
"Then make sure you know the difference."
The video ended.
Daniel bent forward as if someone had struck him.
Claire felt no satisfaction.
The judge immediately suspended Eleanor's guardianship petition and issued an interim order preventing any unsupervised contact with Lily.
Police officers approached Eleanor at the defense table.
For the first time, Eleanor looked afraid.
As they prepared to escort her away, she turned toward Daniel.
"Tell them about the lake house."
Daniel went still.
Claire noticed.
"What lake house?"
Eleanor smiled despite the officers at her sides.
"Ask your husband where his father kept the originals."
Daniel stared at the floor.
Claire's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Daniel."
He finally looked at her.
"There is a safe at the lake house."
"What is in it?"
Daniel swallowed.
"I don't know."
