Chapter 12 - The Woman Upstairs.

Claire recognized the voice before the emergency lights flickered on.
It was not Eleanor.
It was Ms. Palmer from Lily's school.
The assistant principal stood at the top of the basement stairs holding a fireplace poker with both hands.
Her face looked wild and exhausted.
One investigator ordered her to drop it.
Instead, she backed toward the kitchen.
"You don't understand," she said.
"She will destroy me."
Daniel followed the investigator upstairs.
Claire stayed near the safe with Margaret.
"Who?" Daniel called.
Ms. Palmer laughed bitterly.
"Your mother."
She lowered the poker but did not release it.
"She paid the school, she paid Ward, and she paid me."
Claire stepped into the hall.
"Then why are you here?"
Ms. Palmer looked toward the basement.
"Because there is something in that safe that proves I knew about the medication."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Did you?"
Ms. Palmer began shaking.
"Not at first."
The investigator moved closer.
She raised the poker again.
"Stay back."
Then she confessed in fragments.
Eleanor had initially asked the school to document every unusual thing Lily did.
Ms. Palmer believed the request was part of a custody dispute.
After the Bennett Foundation promised a major donation, she cooperated.
She allowed Steven Warren to meet Lily privately.
She accepted reports without checking his license.
Months later, she saw him give Eleanor a small blue bottle in the school parking lot.
She asked what it was.
Eleanor told her it was "the reason the reports would stay consistent."
Ms. Palmer understood then.
She stayed silent anyway.
"Why come here today?" Claire asked.
Ms. Palmer looked at Daniel.
"Your mother called me from the courthouse holding room."
Everyone went still.
Eleanor had somehow used a phone before being fully processed.
She told Ms. Palmer that Richard kept a video confession at the lake house.
She threatened to send it to police if Ms. Palmer did not destroy the safe contents first.
Claire almost admired Eleanor's cruelty in the abstract.
Even cornered, she could still turn frightened people into weapons.
Ms. Palmer's grip loosened.
The investigator took the poker from her.
She sank into a chair and covered her face.
"I never meant for Lily to get hurt."
Claire's voice stayed cold.
"You watched her get hurt and protected yourself."
Ms. Palmer had no answer.
Police took her into custody for questioning.
The investigators secured the lake house and collected everything from Richard's safe.
By late afternoon, Claire believed they finally had enough to stop Eleanor permanently.
Then Evelyn called.
Claire answered on the first ring.
Evelyn was crying.
"Claire, don't panic."
Claire's whole body went cold.
"Where is Lily?"
"She's gone."
The room tilted.
Evelyn rushed through the explanation.
A woman wearing a county child-services badge had arrived with paperwork claiming Lily needed to be moved for a medical examination.
The child protection officer checked the identification against a phone number printed on the order.
The number reached an office that confirmed the transfer.
Twenty minutes after Lily left, the real county office called and said no transfer had been authorized.
Claire stopped hearing the rest.
"What vehicle?"
"White SUV."
"License plate?"
"Covered."
Daniel grabbed his phone.
Claire's hands trembled so violently she nearly dropped hers.
Then a text appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Lily sitting in the back seat of a car.
She was crying.
Around her neck hung Eleanor's pearl necklace.
Below the photograph was a message.
Bring the originals to where Richard taught her to swim.
