Chapter 4 - The North Window.

Claire did not go to Margaret Hale's office immediately.

The photograph felt like bait, and Richard's letter had taught her that every obvious path in the Bennett family led through someone else's trap.

She drove Lily to a twenty-four-hour medical clinic instead.

A physician documented the red marks on Lily's shoulders and ordered blood and urine screens after Claire explained the unknown drops.

The physician warned that many substances cleared the body quickly.

Claire asked the hotel to preserve security footage showing when Daniel arrived.

She asked the clinic to seal every sample under her name only.

Then she called the police.

By the time two officers arrived, Lily had fallen asleep against Claire's side beneath a paper examination blanket.

Claire gave them the blue bottle.

She gave them a copy of Richard's letter.

She described Eleanor's grip on Lily, the staged bracelet accusation, the hidden medication, and the emergency guardianship petition.

One officer listened carefully.

The other looked skeptical when eight million dollars entered the story.

"Family money makes people say remarkable things," he said.

Claire met his eyes.

"Family money makes people do remarkable things too."

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later with his own attorney.

Claire nearly exploded.

The attorney raised both hands.

"I'm not here for you, Mrs. Bennett."

He looked at Daniel.

"I'm here because Mr. Bennett called me after realizing his mother may have used his electronic signature on court documents."

Daniel placed his phone on the counter.

The guardianship petition had been filed at 1:17 p.m.

At that exact time, he had been sitting in the dining room while Eleanor held Lily in the foyer.

The petition claimed Daniel supported removing Lily from Claire's care.

Daniel said he had never seen it.

Claire wanted to believe that mattered.

It did not erase the words They're right.

It did not erase years of cowardice disguised as keeping peace.

Still, the forged signature changed the legal landscape.

The skeptical officer stopped looking bored.

Daniel's attorney requested an immediate digital fraud review.

Claire received a text from the unknown number again.

North window, 4:30, come alone.

It was already 4:12.

She showed the message to the officers.

They advised her not to go.

Claire agreed.

Then she privately asked Daniel's attorney for the address of Margaret Hale's office.

She did not go alone.

At 4:29, Claire stood across the street with one officer while another entered the building through the rear stairwell.

Margaret's office occupied the second floor of an old brick building with tall arched windows.

The northernmost window had a cracked pane patched with clear tape.

At exactly 4:30, the blinds moved.

A woman's hand appeared behind the glass.

The hand tapped twice.

The officer beside Claire spoke into his radio.

They crossed the street.

Inside, the receptionist from the phone call sat shaking behind her desk.

The office had been ransacked.

File cabinets stood open.

A printer lay on its side.

Margaret Hale was in the conference room with a cut above her eyebrow and a split lip.

She was alive.

She looked at Claire and did not say hello.

"North window," she whispered.

Claire finally trusted her.

Margaret pointed toward the second brown envelope on the desk.

"Richard told me to give you that only if Eleanor moved against Lily."

Claire opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor standing beside a man Claire recognized from Lily's school.

Dr. Stephen Ward.

The behavioral specialist.

On the back, Richard had written a date from three months before his death.

Below the date were four words.

He is not a doctor.
