Chapter 13 - Where Richard Taught Her to Swim.

The old swimming dock lay half a mile behind the lake house through a narrow trail of pines.

Claire knew the place instantly.

Richard had taught Lily to float there during a family summer three years earlier.

He had called her his little lighthouse because she refused to close her eyes in the water.

Now Eleanor was using that memory as a threat.

The investigators forbade Claire from going alone.

Claire agreed because fear had burned away any desire to prove bravery.

Police created a plan using plainclothes officers hidden along the wooded trail and a tracker taped beneath the metal document box.

The originals Richard had saved remained safe with investigators.

The box Claire carried contained certified copies and harmless paper.

Daniel insisted on going with her.

Claire refused at first.

Then one detective pointed out that Eleanor might become more volatile if Daniel was absent.

They walked toward the lake together without speaking.

The sky had darkened to iron gray.

Wind pushed small waves against the dock posts.

At the edge of the clearing stood the white SUV.

Its rear door was open.

Lily sat inside wrapped in a wool blanket.

She was alive.

Eleanor stood between the vehicle and the dock.

She wore no coat.

Her pearls were gone because they were around Lily's neck.

Beside her stood Steven Warren.

Claire had seen him in offices and photographs, but never with fear exposed on his face.

He held Lily's shoulder with one hand.

"Let her go," Claire said.

Eleanor's gaze moved to the metal box.

"Put it on the dock."

Claire obeyed.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mom, this is over."

Eleanor's face twisted.

"You made it over when you chose her."

"I should have chosen my daughter years ago."

The sentence reached Lily.

She began crying harder.

Eleanor glanced back at her.

"Stop that noise."

Claire's body moved before her mind did.

Warren tightened his grip on Lily.

"Don't."

Claire stopped.

"Steven, the police have the toxicology report."

Warren's eyes flicked toward the woods.

Eleanor hissed.

"She's lying."

Claire kept talking.

"They have Evelyn's video."

Warren looked at Eleanor.

"You said she destroyed it."

"She did."

"They have Richard's recording from the night he died."

Warren's face drained.

Eleanor took one step toward him.

"Do not listen to her."

That was the mistake.

Lily pulled away from Warren's loosened hand and ran.

Claire sprinted forward.

Warren grabbed for Lily's dress and missed.

Daniel intercepted him.

The two men crashed against the side of the SUV.

Plainclothes officers burst from the tree line.

Eleanor seized the metal box and ran toward the dock.

Claire caught Lily and dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around her.

"Mommy!"

"I've got you."

Lily clung to her neck.

Behind them, Eleanor reached the end of the dock with the box pressed against her chest.

An officer ordered her to stop.

She opened the lid.

When she saw copies instead of originals, something in her face shattered.

"You think Richard won?" she screamed.

Claire stood with Lily in her arms.

"No."

"Lily did."

Eleanor hurled the box into the lake.

Then she stepped backward onto the slick edge of the dock.

Her heel slipped.

Daniel shouted.

An officer caught Eleanor by the wrist before she fell into the water.

For one absurd second, she dangled above the lake she had threatened to use against a child.

The officer pulled her up and handcuffed her.

Warren was already facedown beside the SUV with another officer restraining him.

Claire thought the nightmare had finally reached its end.

Then Lily whispered against her shoulder.

"Mommy, Grandma said Grandpa didn't die in his study."

Claire pulled back.

"What?"

Lily's eyes were swollen from crying.

"She said Daddy moved him there."

Claire slowly turned toward Daniel.

He had heard every word.

May you like

And the terror on his face was not confusion.

It was recognition.
