Chapter 6 - The Paper Mother.

The psychiatric report was twelve pages long.

It described panic attacks Claire had never suffered, violent behavior she had never displayed, and a hospitalization that had never happened.

It even claimed she had once threatened to disappear with Lily if Daniel tried to leave her.

Every lie was written in the careful language of a professional record.

Margaret disconnected the office computers from the internet.

The printer stopped halfway through page seven.

Daniel's attorney photographed the document before anyone touched it.

"This is not just family manipulation anymore," he said.

"Someone is manufacturing evidence."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Someone who had my signature."

Daniel went pale.

They both remembered the same place at the same time.

The Bennett family office had copies of Claire's passport, driver's license, tax documents, medical insurance forms, and dozens of signed estate papers.

Eleanor had insisted years earlier that all family records be centralized "for emergencies."

Claire had thought it was controlling.

She had not understood how useful control could become when turned into a weapon.

The officers took the report as evidence.

Margaret arranged for Claire and Lily to leave through the building's underground garage.

On the way out, Lily tugged Claire's hand.

"Mommy, I remember Dr. Ward."

Claire stopped.

"What do you remember?"

Lily frowned with the concentration of a child trying to pull a picture from a dream.

"He told Grandma I didn't cry enough."

Claire felt ice spread through her stomach.

"When did he say that?"

"At her house."

Daniel stared at his daughter.

"Ward came to Mom's house?"

Lily nodded.

"He gave Grandma stickers."

"What kind of stickers?"

"Numbers."

Claire crouched.

"Did he put them anywhere?"

Lily pointed to her own shoulder, then her wrist, then the side of her neck.

"He said they were for a game."

Daniel whispered something under his breath.

Margaret called the investigating officer back immediately.

Within an hour, police obtained enough cause to request access to Ward's supposed business records.

They discovered that the fake specialist had previously worked as a private caregiver under another name.

His real name was Steven Warren.

He had been dismissed from a residential treatment center five years earlier for falsifying medication logs.

The connection to Eleanor was not yet clear.

Claire and Lily reached the secure apartment shortly after sunset.

It was small, anonymous, and blessedly quiet.

Claire locked the door, checked every window, and made Lily grilled cheese from groceries Margaret had sent ahead.

Lily ate three bites and asked whether Daddy was coming.

Claire could not lie.

"Not tonight."

"Is he bad?"

Claire sat beside her.

"Daddy made bad choices."

"Like Grandma?"

Claire hesitated.

"Not the same choices."

Lily considered that carefully.

Then she whispered.

"Grandma said Daddy always chooses her."

Claire had no response.

After Lily fell asleep, Claire examined every item they had brought from the Bennett house.

She checked pockets, seams, shoes, the stuffed rabbit, and the lining of her handbag.

Inside Lily's cardigan pocket she found a tiny white square.

At first she thought it was a sticker.

Then she saw the printed serial number.

It was a pharmacy label fragment.

The medication name had been torn away.

Only the dosage remained.

2.5 mg nightly.

Below it was a patient's name.

Not Lily Bennett.

Richard Bennett.

Claire stared at the label until her vision narrowed.

The same bottle that had been hidden in Lily's rabbit might not have been prepared for Lily at all.

It might have belonged to a dead man.
