Chapter 14 - Daniel's Silence.
The drive back to the city happened in separate vehicles.
Claire refused to speak to Daniel until Lily was safe with a pediatric trauma specialist and two officers remained outside the hospital room.
Then she found him alone in a consultation room.
He sat with his elbows on his knees and his hands locked together.
Claire closed the door.
"Tell me why Lily said you moved Richard's body."
Daniel did not pretend not to understand.
That frightened her.
"The night Dad died, Mom called me at 11:18."
Claire stayed standing.
"She said he had collapsed in the upstairs hall."
Daniel's voice sounded hollow.
"When I got there, he was on the floor near the guest room."
"Was he alive?"
Daniel squeezed his eyes shut.
"Barely."
Claire's breath caught.
"Did you call an ambulance?"
"I reached for my phone."
"That is not what I asked."
Daniel looked up.
"Mom told me he had a do-not-resuscitate order."
"Did he?"
"Not one that applied to that situation."
Claire felt sick.
Daniel continued before she could speak.
Eleanor told him Richard had taken extra heart medication by mistake.
She said an ambulance would only humiliate him and create questions about his mental state.
She told Daniel to help move Richard to the study so she could call the family physician privately.
Daniel obeyed.
Richard opened his eyes once while Daniel carried him.
He whispered one word.
Lily.
Daniel placed him on the study floor.
Eleanor ordered him to leave.
He left.
Twenty-eight minutes later, she called and said Richard was dead.
Claire could not feel her hands.
"You left a dying man on the floor because your mother told you to."
Daniel began crying.
"Yes."
"And you never told anyone."
"I told myself he was already dying."
Claire stepped back as if distance could protect her from the truth.
"You told yourself whatever let you sleep."
Daniel nodded.
There was no defense left in him.
Claire asked the final question.
"Did you know she was drugging him?"
"Not then."
"Did you suspect after Evelyn warned you about Lily?"
Daniel's silence answered.
Claire's eyes burned.
"You suspected."
"I was afraid."
"Lily was six."
Daniel broke completely.
"I know."
Claire left the room and found the lead detective.
She told him everything Daniel had confessed.
Daniel repeated the confession formally with his attorney present.
The statement reopened Richard Bennett's death investigation.
Authorities obtained an order to exhume Richard's body for additional toxicology testing.
Eleanor was charged initially with kidnapping, evidence tampering, fraud-related offenses, and child endangerment while prosecutors evaluated more serious charges.
Steven Warren faced charges connected to the medication scheme and abduction.
Ms. Palmer began negotiating cooperation.
None of it made Claire feel victorious.
That evening, Lily woke from a nightmare and asked for Daniel.
Claire's heart tightened.
"Do you want to see Daddy?"
Lily nodded.
Daniel stood in the doorway when Claire allowed him in under supervision.
He did not touch Lily until she reached for his hand.
"Daddy, did Grandma make you mean?"
Daniel looked at Claire first.
Then he looked back at his daughter.
"Grandma taught me to be scared."
He swallowed.
"But I chose what I did when I was scared."
Claire had not expected him to tell Lily the truth so plainly.
Lily frowned.
"Are you still scared?"
"Yes."
"Then choose better."
Daniel covered his face.
Claire turned away because the pain in the room belonged partly to all of them.
Later, Margaret arrived with one last item recovered from Richard's lake house safe.
It was a sealed brown envelope Claire had not seen before.
On the front Richard had written a date.
Not the date of his death.
Not Lily's birthday.
Claire recognized it after a moment.
It was the date she married Daniel.
