Chapter 14: The Last Promise

On the anniversary of the trial, they returned to the courthouse.
Not for a hearing.
Not for a fight.
Just to stand.
Together.
The steps were quieter now. The cameras gone. The noise replaced by something softer.
Closure.
Lily took a deep breath.
“I used to be afraid of this place,” she admitted.
Arthur nodded.
“Me too.”
She looked at him, surprised.
“You?”
He smiled faintly.
“Fear doesn’t disappear,” he said. “You just learn what’s worth facing it for.”
Lily reached for his hand.
“Thank you,” she said.
“For what?”
“For keeping your promise.”
