Chapter 15: The Only Thing That Lasts

Years later, the house was filled with laughter again.
Children ran across the same yard where fear had once lived.
The porch remained unchanged.
So did the view.
But everything else was different.
Better.
Lily sat where she once had, watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Arthur joined her, slower now, older—but lighter.
“Do you ever think about it?” she asked.
“The past?”
Arthur considered.
“Sometimes,” he said.
“And?”
He looked at her.
“At how close I came to losing what actually mattered.”
Lily smiled.
“But you didn’t.”
“No,” he said.
“Because you reminded me.”
The wind moved softly through the trees.
Peaceful.
Earned.
And permanent.
Arthur leaned back in his chair, eyes on the fading light.
“In the end,” he said quietly, “money fades. Power shifts. Fear disappears.”
Lily waited.
“What doesn’t?” she asked.
Arthur glanced at the children.
Then back at her.
“Love,” he said.
“And the promises we keep.”
The sun disappeared.
But the light remained.

And this time—
it wasn’t going anywhere.
