Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker, casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

For a moment, Claire Morgan could hear nothing except the soft clink of Robert's champagne flute against his ring.

She had been looking for her six-year-old daughter for nearly ten minutes.

Lily had vanished from the crowded anniversary dinner without saying a word.

Patricia had waved away Claire's concern with a tired smile.

"She's probably upstairs with that rabbit again."

Claire had almost believed her.

Then she noticed the guest-room door at the end of the hall was nearly closed.

Lily never closed doors in unfamiliar houses.

Claire pushed it open.

The warm noise of the party disappeared behind her.

Lily was lying across the bed, still wearing her yellow unicorn dress.

Her stuffed rabbit was trapped beneath one arm.

Her small face looked swollen, and she did not stir when Claire said her name.

"Lily."

Claire crossed the room so fast that her shoulder struck the doorframe.

"Baby, look at me."

There was no answer.

Claire's hands shook as she reached for her phone.

She did not ask permission.

She did not call Patricia.

She did not call Robert.

She dialed 911.

The operator answered almost immediately.

"911, what's your emergency?"

Claire swallowed hard and forced every word through the panic in her throat.

"My daughter is six years old, and she isn't responding normally."

The operator asked for the address.

Claire gave it twice because the first time her voice broke.

She sat beside Lily and kept one hand close to her shoulder without moving her unnecessarily.

"Help is coming, sweetheart."

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Patricia appeared first.

Her gray hair was immaculate, her patterned blouse unwrinkled, and her expression carried more annoyance than fear.

Robert stood behind her with the same champagne flute he had held downstairs.

He did not rush forward.

He did not ask whether Lily was breathing.

He looked at Claire's phone.

"Who are you calling?"

Claire stared at him.

"Emergency services."

Patricia's mouth tightened.

"Claire, don't be dramatic."

Something inside Claire went still.

Five minutes earlier, that sentence might have made her doubt herself.

Now it made her stand.

She placed herself between Lily and the doorway.

"Do not come near her."

Robert's face hardened.

"This is our house."

"And that is my daughter."

Patricia folded her arms.

"You are turning a small family matter into a spectacle."

Claire heard the operator through the speaker.

"Ma'am, stay on the line with me."

Claire did not take her eyes off Patricia.

"I'm staying right here."

Robert took one slow sip from his glass.

That calm movement frightened Claire more than shouting would have.

Downstairs, someone laughed, unaware that the night had changed.

Patricia stepped into the room.

Claire raised one hand.

"Stop."

Patricia stopped, but only because red and blue light suddenly swept across the bedroom wall.

Robert turned toward the window.

His glass lowered.

The operator's voice became firm.

"Police and medical responders are arriving now."

For the first time that evening, Patricia looked afraid.

Then Claire noticed something else.

Patricia was staring not at Lily, not at Claire, and not at the flashing lights.

She was staring at the small white rabbit on the bed.

And before Claire could ask why, Patricia whispered two words that made Claire's blood run cold.

"Where's the phone?"
