Chapter 11 - The Old Rule.
Daniel's statement lasted nearly three hours.
Claire did not hear it until the next day.
When he finally told her, he did not make excuses for waiting so long.
He told her about the old rule in the Morgan house.
Family problems stayed inside the family.
If a teacher asked why Daniel was upset, he was supposed to say he was tired.
If a neighbor heard yelling, Patricia called it a misunderstanding.
If Daniel challenged his mother, Robert reminded him how much the family had done for him.
None of Daniel's memories alone explained what happened to Lily.
Together, they explained why Patricia and Robert reacted to 911 as if Claire had committed the offense.
"I thought all families had rules like that."
Claire looked at him.
"Not those rules."
Daniel nodded.
"I know that now."
Detective Ruiz called that afternoon.
"Daniel's statement helps establish context, but I want to be clear that we still need evidence about this specific incident."
Claire appreciated the distinction.
She did not want assumptions replacing facts, even when the assumptions seemed obvious.
"What happens next?"
"We continue verifying the timeline."
Ruiz had more news.
The security company had recovered motion logs from Robert's account.
One log showed manual access to the upstairs camera settings shortly after Lily tried to call Claire.
"Who accessed it?"
"The account was logged in on Robert's phone."
Claire closed her eyes.
"He changed the camera settings."
"Someone using his phone did."
"At what time?"
Ruiz told her.
It was less than two minutes after Lily's missed call.
Claire thought about Robert's comment that the camera could not see inside the guest room.
He had known exactly what the system recorded.
He had also believed he could control what remained.
Ruiz continued.
"There's another detail."
Claire braced herself.
"The camera settings were changed back after the ambulance left."
"Why?"
"We don't know."
Daniel looked sick.
"He was trying to make it look like nothing changed."
Ruiz did not confirm the interpretation.
"That will be for investigators and, if necessary, a court to evaluate."
Claire looked toward Lily, who was coloring at the table.
She drew a house with three windows and a huge yellow sun.
No grandparents appeared in the picture.
That evening, Patricia sent Daniel an email.
It was long, emotional, and carefully written.
She said she loved Lily.
She said Claire had always disliked her.
She said the family was being torn apart by assumptions.
She said Robert had only tried to prevent "chaos" after Lily became upset.
Daniel read one sentence aloud.
"Your wife has chosen strangers in uniforms over the people who raised you."
Claire stared at him.
"What do you think?"
Daniel deleted the email from his screen but saved a copy for Ruiz.
"I think the people who raised me taught me exactly why Claire called them."
Claire felt the weight of his answer.
Then Lily looked up from her coloring book.
"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Grandpa told Grandma the picture would be gone."
Daniel froze.
Claire knelt beside Lily.
"What picture, sweetheart?"
Lily pointed toward the hallway as if she could still see Patricia's house.
"The camera picture."
Claire and Daniel looked at each other.
