Chapter 9 - The Family Meeting Without Claire.

The Morgan family held a meeting two days later.

Claire was not invited.

She learned about it from Denise.

Robert's attorney had advised everyone not to discuss the investigation, but Patricia apparently believed that rule applied only when discussion might hurt her.

She called twelve relatives to her sister's house.

She told them Claire was emotional.

She said the police were treating ordinary family discipline as something sinister.

She said Lily was tired, confused, and influenced by her mother's fear.

Denise sat through twenty minutes before finally standing up.

"Lily is six."

Patricia stared at her.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means stop turning a child into your defense strategy."

Robert slammed his palm against the table.

"Enough."

Denise did not sit down.

"No, Robert."

"You have done enough damage."

"I told the truth."

"You told the police what you thought you heard."

"I heard Lily asking for her mother."

The room went silent.

Patricia's face tightened.

"Children say things when they're upset."

Denise stared at her sister.

"Why was she upset?"

Patricia had no answer.

The story reached Claire through Denise that evening.

Claire listened without interrupting.

She had reached a point where every new attempt to minimize the situation made her less confused, not more.

The pattern was becoming visible.

Patricia never answered a direct question.

She answered a different question that made her sound reasonable.

Robert did something similar.

He attacked the person asking.

Detective Ruiz called later.

"I need you to know they may contact you through relatives."

"They already are."

"Save everything."

Claire looked at dozens of unread messages.

"I will."

"Also, Robert changed his statement again."

Claire almost smiled without humor.

"What's the version now?"

"He says Lily handed him the phone voluntarily."

"Ethan saw him carrying it after Lily was crying."

"Yes."

"And the phone's back cover was in a trash bag."

"Yes."

"And he originally said he never saw her upstairs."

"Correct."

Claire leaned against the wall.

"How many different stories can someone tell before the changing stories become the story?"

Ruiz was quiet for a moment.

"That's often how investigations move forward."

That night, Claire finally took Lily home.

Not to the house she shared with Robert and Patricia's son, Daniel.

Daniel had been away on business during the anniversary dinner and returned after the emergency.

He was Lily's father.

And he had spent the previous forty-eight hours saying almost nothing.

Claire had moved with Lily into her sister's apartment temporarily.

Daniel arrived around eight carrying Lily's favorite blanket.

He stood in the doorway looking exhausted.

"Can I see her?"

Claire hesitated.

"Of course."

He sat beside Lily and cried quietly while she slept.

Later, in the kitchen, Claire asked the question she had been avoiding.

"Do you believe your parents?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I don't know what I believe."

Claire felt something inside her break.

"Then believe the facts."

"They're my parents."

"She's your daughter."

Daniel looked up.

Claire waited for him to answer.

Instead, his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

May you like

PATRICIA.

And to Claire's disbelief, Daniel answered.
