Chapter 4 - Two Stories in One House.

The ambulance doors closed with Claire inside.

Through the rear window, she saw officers guide Patricia and Robert in opposite directions.

The flashing lights painted the front of the house red, then blue, then red again.

Claire wanted to hate them both immediately.

Instead, her mind kept searching for an explanation that would make the night less terrible.

Maybe Patricia had panicked.

Maybe Robert had gone upstairs after hearing Lily fall.

Maybe the broken phone was nothing more than an accident.

Every possibility collapsed against the same question.

Why had they lied?

At the hospital, nurses moved Lily through a set of double doors.

Claire was asked to wait outside while the medical team evaluated her.

A detective named Elena Ruiz arrived twenty minutes later.

She wore a plain dark jacket and spoke with a calmness Claire desperately needed.

"I know this is difficult, but I need to ask you a few questions."

Claire nodded.

"Ask anything."

Ruiz sat beside her.

"Did Lily have any reason to fear Patricia or Robert before tonight?"

Claire opened her mouth and stopped.

There were memories.

Small memories.

Easy-to-dismiss memories.

Lily refusing sleepovers at the grandparents' house.

Lily becoming quiet when Patricia corrected her table manners.

Robert calling her "too sensitive" when she cried.

Claire had interpreted all of it as generational friction.

Now each memory felt heavier.

"She didn't like being alone there."

Ruiz wrote something down.

"Did she ever tell you why?"

"She said Grandma got mean when adults weren't around."

Claire covered her mouth.

She remembered laughing gently at the wording.

She had told Lily that Grandma was old-fashioned.

The shame was unbearable.

Ruiz did not judge her.

"Children often describe situations with the words they have."

Claire nodded through tears.

"What are Patricia and Robert saying?"

Ruiz paused.

"Their accounts don't match."

Claire looked up.

"How?"

"Patricia says Lily became upset because she was asked to put away the phone and then ran into the guest room."

"And Robert?"

"Robert says he never saw Lily upstairs until after you called 911."

Claire stared at her.

"Denise said he went upstairs."

"She did."

"So he's lying."

Ruiz remained careful.

"I'm saying there are inconsistencies."

A doctor entered the waiting area.

Claire stood immediately.

"Is she awake?"

"Not yet, but she's stable."

Claire's knees nearly gave out.

The doctor explained that Lily would stay for observation and that specialists would document her condition.

Claire listened to every word.

She did not ask for graphic details.

She only asked one thing.

"Can I see her?"

The doctor nodded.

Lily looked impossibly small in the hospital bed.

Her stuffed rabbit had been placed beside her after officers finished photographing it.

Claire sat down and held the edge of the blanket.

"I'm right here."

Ruiz remained near the door.

Her phone buzzed.

She read a message and frowned.

Claire noticed.

"What happened?"

Ruiz hesitated.

"Officers searched the guest-room area with the homeowners' consent."

Claire's heart began pounding again.

"And?"

"They found a small trash bag in the upstairs bathroom."

Claire waited.

Ruiz's eyes stayed on hers.

"Inside it was the missing back cover from Lily's phone."

Claire looked at the rabbit beside Lily.

The cracked phone had not simply fallen.

May you like

Someone had handled it afterward.

And somewhere across town, Patricia and Robert were telling two different stories about why.
